Top 100 Music Albums of 1997 by desh79

The year I turned 18, but alas, failed to come of age. I still haven't really grown up, come to think of it.

Now here's a work that is more universally acclaimed as one of the all-time greatest, and rightly so. So much has been written about its prophetic qualities, how it more or less foresaw the algorhythm-driven digital hellscape we all inhabit these days, and much more eloquently than I ever could hope to, that I will spare you any more pseudophilosophical ramblings thereof.

I will, however, add this: for a 17-year old who had spent the previous two years in Britpop narcolepsy, this was an utter revelation. Rock and electronic music can actually mix? Whaaaa?

Yes, the title track draws from Pachelbel's Canon in D Major, but so does basically every piece of music that's halfway good or decent. As someone who underwent his first major painful teenage separation when this came out, I salute this album, and then some. [First added to this chart: 05/17/2017]

Another side effect of the Oasis/Britpop hype was The Verve becoming, for a short while and in the UK at least, absolutely massive. Walking into a McDonald's in Cambridge, and hearing "Sonnet" playing on the loudspeakers, was the moment I realised that the kind of music I liked to listen to had finally crossed over into the mainstream proper, which was nice while it lasted. Not in the top 200 for the year? Not even close to the top 100? Oh man. This was one of the highlights of the Britpop era! Tomorrow, Waltzing Along and She's a Star (the latter a top ten hit, no less) are some of the best songs in James's repertoire. I wonder if the cover - which, diplomatically put, is a matter of taste - may have something to do with its low ranking. [First added to this chart: 01/12/2018]

Experience was their "Rave acts can make albums too!"-album. Jilted Generation was the "Rave acts can be political and sorta kinda make concept albums!"-album. This? It's the "Let's cross the Atlantic and MAKE LOADSAMONEY"-album. In a way it should have been the final Prodigy album, but alas. A genuinely good album in parts (Breathe, Mindfields, Narayan are superb tracks) but already hints that there won't be very much of interest coming in the future, as it unfortunately proved to be. A return to form after the (IMO) major hiccup of The Great Escape; Blur were wise enough to turn their backs on Britpop, as that scene disintegrated, to take on a more alt-rock approach, the result being an album that consist of some of their strongest work (particularly Beetlebum, my favourite song of 1997). Kind of the aural equivalent of me running down Sidney Street in Cambridge and loudly bellowing "I spit on you and your one-dimensional, meagre verse-chorus-verse structures! Spit!". Which I never did, although plenty of times in my mind. [First added to this chart: 05/17/2017]
