Top 100 Greatest Music Albums by eclab (2019)

I try to judge albums in a context-independent way - i.e. I don't intend to take originality/influence into account, otherwise "Revolver" or something would be at the top. The best albums, to me, don't have to be influential, nor even especially original or distinctive. They just have to sound great.

I continually find myself getting halfway through this album and feeling like it must be about to end, because it's already had far more quality material by that point than most band's careers. But nope, it's only been about 20 minutes and there's more brilliance to come.

Rating metrics: Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some charts can have several thousand ratings)

This chart is rated in the top 3% of charts on BestEverAlbums.com. This chart has a mean average rating of 88.0/100. The trimmed mean (excluding outliers) is 88.8/100. The standard deviation for this chart is 8.0.

Everyone has there own little idiosyncrasies but I wouldn’t argue with anything on this list. Great job, you are definitely someone to hang and listen to music with.

Great chart, I love the Joanna choice at number one. People are too freaked out by her vocals at times but I think they are beautiful.

Even though a lot of these picks are very familiar, your careful ordering of them and mix of old and new make this a great chart. I love the little scores you've given each album as well. Good to see Queen Jo on top!! Would love to see more notes like the one you've added for Ys.

Excellent list chock full of classics and influential albums, almost looks like a magazines list. Except for the surprise #1 which is one of the only albums on the list i have not heard. i will have to check it out.
