"Most Neil Young albums show off only one part of this multi-talented man's muse at a time. This CD is all of them at once, in bite-size pieces still full of enough bile to give you indegestion!" Highlight: anti-drug song 'No More', the cleverest of any on the subject.(Read more of this review at Alan's Album Archives - see my profile page for more) [First added to this chart: 11/08/2011]

"Another forgotten gem that sold poorly at the time (and again on CD a few years back), 'Headroom' is a classic album by the Hollies singer, full of classy swamp rockers and heart-melting ballads." Highlight: the mournfulo ballad 'Who?' where 'being nowhere ain't where I belong'.(Read more of this review at Alan's Album Archives - see my profile page for more) [First added to this chart: 11/08/2011]

"Full of the energy and excitement of the tie-in film but, surprisingly by 1964 standards, much of it's underlying melancholy as well." Highlight: 'I'll Be Back' sees the album end on such a jarring note of bitterness and sadness that it's way ahead of it's time.(Read more of this review at Alan's Album Archives - see my profile page for more) [First added to this chart: 11/08/2011]

"It's a close-run thing which Furries albums are the best. Generally I love half of each and aren't that keen on the rest but this is their most consistent and, in 'Piccalo Snare' may well contain their greatest moment." [First added to this chart: 11/08/2011]

"Supposed 'failure' from man who 'thinks too much' is actually a delight. A sweet little album containing many of Paul's career highlights, even if no one but the faithful heard them at the time." Highlight: there are three masterpieces vying for space here - the epic title track, the head-hanging 'Train In The Distance' and tour de froce Lennon tribute 'The Late Great Johnny Ace'.(Read more of this review at Alan's Album Archives - see my profile page for more) [First added to this chart: 11/08/2011]

"Early entry for teenage whizzkid before he bought a trampoline, on an under-rated record divided into a 'rocking' side and a 'dreamy' side. Both halves are strong and make for an excellent diverse LP." Highlight: fan favourite 'Moon Tears'. [First added to this chart: 11/08/2011]

"The Small Faces were busy transforming themselves from teenyboppers into something deeper on this album - despite it's fractured background, this forgotten little gem is probably their most consistent" Highlight: pop classic 'My Way Of Giving'.(Read more of this review at Alan's Album Archives - see my profile page for more) [First added to this chart: 11/08/2011]

"Personally I'm not that keen on 'Forever Changes' - it's this album that has the best balance of urgent rock and dreamy philosophy, despite an unlistenable second side jam that gets in the way." "In which the Wings and Moodies guitarist is re-born, on a fascinating series of songs about rebirth and overcoming obstacles. Sure the sound is a bit synth-heavy but the songs themselves are tremendous and Denny has never sounded better than he does here." Highlight: Eternal Quest. Rating metrics: Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some charts can have several thousand ratings)

This chart has a Bayesian average rating of 85.3/100, a mean average of 84.8/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 85.0/100. The standard deviation for this chart is 9.6.

Even though we only have a handful of albums in common, I like how you describe them, especially the top 10.

Many thanks for your comment, I'm glad you like it and yes, "Long, Long, Long" is easily one of The Beatles' best songs!

I have seen your chart a couple of times before, but I'm very curious to know how "Trans" is compared to other Neil Young albums. I've only heard very few of his albums.

Really cool chart! Neil Young's Trans is woefully ignored by most. Well done!

Xavygravy: I totally agree, 'I Went To Sleep' would be the best thing on the album if it weren't for the 'Smile' pair, which do indeed sound out of place here. Pleased to hear of another fan who understand the Beach Boys 'magic'!

Xavygravy: I love 'Friends', I so wish it was better known! I've always been so impressed by how together Brian Wilson is on that album, despite all his troubles. Did you get it on the two-fer-one Cd with '20/20'? That's quite a strong album too!

Thanks for commenting on my chart alan :0). I like yours too. Looks like a real music lovers one. If only i could get around to reviewing all the albums on mine too. I'm particularly keen to see love for Tigermilk, Sunflower, and Super Furry Animals if only half love for the latter :0D.

Excellent chart and reviews, with some albums that will be on my list when I get round to incresing the number from 40 and some others that I need to check out; the Searchers for instance. Thanks for your positive comments on my chart. Arthur is the one Kinks album I don't actually own. When I finally get hold of it I will be able to judge whether it is better than Village Green!

nrs182:I honestly don't like 'Pet Sounds' 'Graceland' 'Brothers In Arms' or 'Abbey Road' that much: for me all three are highly over-rated, aren't that original or pioneering and have dated really badly compared to the gems in the artists' catalogue (like 'Smile' 'Hearts and Bones' 'Love Over Gold' etc). I'd hate to think I had to like certain albums just because everyone else does. Thanks for the comments and ratings though and glad to have found another Monkees collector!
