"A truly unique album, with the backing tracks recorded 1st and the songs written to fit, giving it a hazy, fragmented quality. Every bit as radical as Paul's earlier work and just as satisfying." Highlight: 'Further To Fly' is as gorgeous a song as Paul Simon has ever written. "What you see is what you get. N Young sideman and E-Street member delivers a gritty, angry masterpiece, full of hard-hitting imagery about life in the modern age and lyrics about mistakes and failure." "An inspired and inventive Pete Townshend tells us how uninspired and old he feels on this voyeuristic album celebrating long dark nights of the soul. Most of the tunes are drop-dead gorgeous." Highlight: 'Blue Red and Gray' - without this glorious, uplifting song at the heart of things this album simply would not work. "Warm, lazy and full of slow-burning epics so delicate in places that they test your powers of hearing, this is probably my favourite Dead album of the lot, subtle and clever and magical all at once." ighlight: Bob Weir's masterpiece 'The Weather Report Suite', all 13 minutes of it!(Read more of this review at Alan's Album Archives - see my profile page for more) [First added to this chart: 11/08/2011]

"Many records are said to be 'life-changing' but this one really is; pop entertainer Cat Stevens is trapped in a hospital room dying from TB. This is the album where his style comes together." "Album recorded in keyboardist's garage is a lovely swansong to the Moodies' original all-in-this-together-sound. One of the nicest bittersweet goodbyes in history, with symphonic landscapes aplenty." "If ever an album was born to be ridiculed at the time and held up as a masterpiece 40 years later then this is it. A post-modern musical classic, even if the film dialogue gives you a 'head'ache." Highlight: its hard to see past the epic majesty of 'Porpoise Song', a track so important to the Monkees canon its actually included twice!(Read more of this review at Alan's Album Archives - see my profile page for more) [First added to this chart: 11/08/2011]

"Extraordinary sole finished album by Beach Boys drummer was a long time coming on CD but so worth the wait. Mixes the music of Smile with the lyrics of Pet Sounds and a moody atmopshere unique to this magnificent work. The unfinished Bambuu, added as an extra to the CD, is ever so nearly as good as well. The best CD I've bought in the past 10 years - how typical it actually dates back to the 70s! "Highlight: 'At The End Of The Day' still makes me cry every time I hear it. Thankyouverymuch for everything I ever dreamed of... Rating metrics: Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some charts can have several thousand ratings)

This chart has a Bayesian average rating of 85.3/100, a mean average of 84.8/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 85.0/100. The standard deviation for this chart is 9.6.

Even though we only have a handful of albums in common, I like how you describe them, especially the top 10.

Many thanks for your comment, I'm glad you like it and yes, "Long, Long, Long" is easily one of The Beatles' best songs!

I have seen your chart a couple of times before, but I'm very curious to know how "Trans" is compared to other Neil Young albums. I've only heard very few of his albums.

Really cool chart! Neil Young's Trans is woefully ignored by most. Well done!

Xavygravy: I totally agree, 'I Went To Sleep' would be the best thing on the album if it weren't for the 'Smile' pair, which do indeed sound out of place here. Pleased to hear of another fan who understand the Beach Boys 'magic'!

Xavygravy: I love 'Friends', I so wish it was better known! I've always been so impressed by how together Brian Wilson is on that album, despite all his troubles. Did you get it on the two-fer-one Cd with '20/20'? That's quite a strong album too!

Thanks for commenting on my chart alan :0). I like yours too. Looks like a real music lovers one. If only i could get around to reviewing all the albums on mine too. I'm particularly keen to see love for Tigermilk, Sunflower, and Super Furry Animals if only half love for the latter :0D.

Excellent chart and reviews, with some albums that will be on my list when I get round to incresing the number from 40 and some others that I need to check out; the Searchers for instance. Thanks for your positive comments on my chart. Arthur is the one Kinks album I don't actually own. When I finally get hold of it I will be able to judge whether it is better than Village Green!

nrs182:I honestly don't like 'Pet Sounds' 'Graceland' 'Brothers In Arms' or 'Abbey Road' that much: for me all three are highly over-rated, aren't that original or pioneering and have dated really badly compared to the gems in the artists' catalogue (like 'Smile' 'Hearts and Bones' 'Love Over Gold' etc). I'd hate to think I had to like certain albums just because everyone else does. Thanks for the comments and ratings though and glad to have found another Monkees collector!
