"In which a psychiatric nurse, a bricklayer and some college buddies put together one of the most quietly brilliant debut albums of all time. If you like 'Lady Eleanor', you'll love this album. And if you don't know it then buy it quick". Highlight: 'Clear White Light', the best gospel song ever written even if its actually an atheist song at heart.(Read more of this review at Alan's Album Archives - see my profile page for more) [First added to this chart: 11/08/2011]

"Take one funnyman, add in a serious car crash and an unmissable deadline + what do you get? Possibly the best 10cc CD of all, opening a window into Eric Stewart's troubled psyche" Highlight: the complex structure of first and last songs '24 Hours' and 'Taxi! Taxi!' that follow much the same pattern. (Read more of this review at Alan's Album Archives - see my profile page for more) [First added to this chart: 11/08/2011]

"Is it just me or did Oasis save all their best work for use as B-sides? As the sleevenotes tell us 'a B-side is no excuse not to care' - most of these songs are better than the well-known A-sides!" Highlight: a fight between Oasis' noisiest and rawest rocker 'Headshrinker' and Noel G's delicate ballad 'Talk Tonight'.(Read more of this review at Alan's Album Archives - see my profile page for more) [First added to this chart: 11/08/2011]

"Over-shadowed by contemporary releases for 40 years, it's about time that 'Take Me For What I'm Worth' is taken for what it is - a last glorious burst of Merseybeat that still points to the future." Highlight: 'Each Time', where The Searchers out-rank Phil Spector in the 'wall of sound' stakes. "An aptly-named album - you can hear the Hollies' sound developing at break-neck speed on this album, dosing each of it's tight three-minute pop masterpieces with a heavy bout of psychedlia." Highlight: 'Rain On My Window'. If The Beatles had written this, it would have been hailed as song of the decade.(Read more of this review at Alan's Album Archives - see my profile page for more) [First added to this chart: 11/08/2011]

"A bleak collection of half-baked songs played by a bunch of drunken musicians, this should be a mess! Instead this wake for departed friends has so much soul and commitment it's hard not to applaud." Highlight: the weary lethargy of 'Borrowed Tune', with Neil so 'wasted' he actually borrows the melody from The Stones' 'Lady Jane'.(Read more of this review at Alan's Album Archives - see my profile page for more) [First added to this chart: 11/08/2011]

"Folk-jazz-rock fusions with a hint of blues and some psychedlia thrown into the mix, this album features old songs dressed up to sound contemporary and new songs that sound like standards." "A series of wolves-in-sheep's-clothing songs, with the quitest and folkiest of all Stones albums one of their most bitter and controversial when you scratch below the surface." Highlight: Mick Jagger's re-telling of the Goldilocks story on 'Whose Been Sleeping Here?', hilarious and tragic all at the same time.(Read more of this review at Alan's Album Archives - see my profile page for more) [First added to this chart: 11/08/2011]

"For my money Stills had the best form of any writer for the five years between 1969 and 1974. This is him at full steam on a double album, with several musical geniuses along for the ride." "Never had the 'quiet Beatle' had so much to say; never did he say it so well or with such a passion. There are so many under-rated individual tracks on this triple LP I could go on for hours - and in actual fact I do, so be warned." Rating metrics: Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some charts can have several thousand ratings)

This chart has a Bayesian average rating of 85.3/100, a mean average of 84.8/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 85.0/100. The standard deviation for this chart is 9.6.

Even though we only have a handful of albums in common, I like how you describe them, especially the top 10.

Many thanks for your comment, I'm glad you like it and yes, "Long, Long, Long" is easily one of The Beatles' best songs!

I have seen your chart a couple of times before, but I'm very curious to know how "Trans" is compared to other Neil Young albums. I've only heard very few of his albums.

Really cool chart! Neil Young's Trans is woefully ignored by most. Well done!

Xavygravy: I totally agree, 'I Went To Sleep' would be the best thing on the album if it weren't for the 'Smile' pair, which do indeed sound out of place here. Pleased to hear of another fan who understand the Beach Boys 'magic'!

Xavygravy: I love 'Friends', I so wish it was better known! I've always been so impressed by how together Brian Wilson is on that album, despite all his troubles. Did you get it on the two-fer-one Cd with '20/20'? That's quite a strong album too!

Thanks for commenting on my chart alan :0). I like yours too. Looks like a real music lovers one. If only i could get around to reviewing all the albums on mine too. I'm particularly keen to see love for Tigermilk, Sunflower, and Super Furry Animals if only half love for the latter :0D.

Excellent chart and reviews, with some albums that will be on my list when I get round to incresing the number from 40 and some others that I need to check out; the Searchers for instance. Thanks for your positive comments on my chart. Arthur is the one Kinks album I don't actually own. When I finally get hold of it I will be able to judge whether it is better than Village Green!

nrs182:I honestly don't like 'Pet Sounds' 'Graceland' 'Brothers In Arms' or 'Abbey Road' that much: for me all three are highly over-rated, aren't that original or pioneering and have dated really badly compared to the gems in the artists' catalogue (like 'Smile' 'Hearts and Bones' 'Love Over Gold' etc). I'd hate to think I had to like certain albums just because everyone else does. Thanks for the comments and ratings though and glad to have found another Monkees collector!
