"Very short but very very sweet: the last really traditional-sounding Beach Boys album is chock-a-block full of delightful harmonies, jazzy licks and intriguing lyrics. Brian Wilson's on great form too, post-Smile breakdown but before retreating to bed full time." Highlight: has there ever been a more charming song than 'Busy Doin' Nothin' (the Brian Wilson song I mean!)(Read more of this review at Alan's Album Archives - see my profile page for more) [First added to this chart: 11/08/2011]

"A second-rate Sgt Peppers? Hardly - this eventful musical journey into the darker underbelly of psychedelia beats it in every way for controlled chaos, energy and commitment, as 3D as the sleeve." Highlight: the scary space journey which is '2000 Light Years From Home'.(Read more of this review at Alan's Album Archives - see my profile page for more) [First added to this chart: 11/08/2011]

"Well, 10/10 is pushing it a bit, but this late-period record mixes a bizarre cover and some unusually straightforward musical grooves with a touch of pathos and hilarity." Highlight: 'Memories' is so 10cc-like, funnt and touching all at the same time.(Read more of this review at Alan's Album Archives - see my profile page for more) [First added to this chart: 11/08/2011]

"Absent from Who write-ups and discussions for too long, taking this bitter pill of an album in 1 swallow might well choke you - but a few sips at regular intervals reveals this to be a milestone album" Highlight: the one song Roger Daltrey refused to sing because it was too personal, 'I Am An Animal', one of Pete's best ever songs. "Vintage Hollies, mixing the things that made them great in the 60s (great musical hooks, terrific 3-part harmonies + instrumental skills to die for) with eveything that's about to come of age in the 70s." Highlight: 'Too Young To Be Married', social protest that makes all the more impact for being so under-stated and simple.(Read more of this review at Alan's Album Archives - see my profile page for more) [First added to this chart: 11/08/2011]

"The most gently optimistic album of The Kinks' career, this is a return to the early punky Kinks sound with a series of songs about Britain's place in the world in the late 80s." Highlight: 'Loony Balloon', on which Ray Davies sees the madness of the UK Coalition Government 20 years early. "Half- fascinatingly oblique and hard-to-follow, quite unlike anything else in Macca's back catalogue, and half honest and intimate, telling us about the joys of home and country like a religious convert." "Soundtrack to highly revealing and under-rated film about Paul Simon's alter ego who scored only 1 hated hit. By contrast, Paul is a multi-trick pony here, with every track of this under-rated CD going somewhere new." "The perfect debut by the perfect band - put 3 musical geniuses together and what do you get? Well, fighting mostly, but in-between some of the best music ever produced." "Inventive, mature and surprisingly scary - is this really Abba? So sad the story ended here just when they were reaching their peak, with songs about war, break-ups, aliens and death that are eight hundred times better than any Abba tracks you hear on the radio!" Highlight: its a fight between the eerie title track about alien invasion or the moody 'Soldiers', one of the best anti-war songs. Rating metrics: Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some charts can have several thousand ratings)

This chart has a Bayesian average rating of 85.3/100, a mean average of 84.8/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 85.0/100. The standard deviation for this chart is 9.6.

Even though we only have a handful of albums in common, I like how you describe them, especially the top 10.

Many thanks for your comment, I'm glad you like it and yes, "Long, Long, Long" is easily one of The Beatles' best songs!

I have seen your chart a couple of times before, but I'm very curious to know how "Trans" is compared to other Neil Young albums. I've only heard very few of his albums.

Really cool chart! Neil Young's Trans is woefully ignored by most. Well done!

Xavygravy: I totally agree, 'I Went To Sleep' would be the best thing on the album if it weren't for the 'Smile' pair, which do indeed sound out of place here. Pleased to hear of another fan who understand the Beach Boys 'magic'!

Xavygravy: I love 'Friends', I so wish it was better known! I've always been so impressed by how together Brian Wilson is on that album, despite all his troubles. Did you get it on the two-fer-one Cd with '20/20'? That's quite a strong album too!

Thanks for commenting on my chart alan :0). I like yours too. Looks like a real music lovers one. If only i could get around to reviewing all the albums on mine too. I'm particularly keen to see love for Tigermilk, Sunflower, and Super Furry Animals if only half love for the latter :0D.

Excellent chart and reviews, with some albums that will be on my list when I get round to incresing the number from 40 and some others that I need to check out; the Searchers for instance. Thanks for your positive comments on my chart. Arthur is the one Kinks album I don't actually own. When I finally get hold of it I will be able to judge whether it is better than Village Green!

nrs182:I honestly don't like 'Pet Sounds' 'Graceland' 'Brothers In Arms' or 'Abbey Road' that much: for me all three are highly over-rated, aren't that original or pioneering and have dated really badly compared to the gems in the artists' catalogue (like 'Smile' 'Hearts and Bones' 'Love Over Gold' etc). I'd hate to think I had to like certain albums just because everyone else does. Thanks for the comments and ratings though and glad to have found another Monkees collector!
