The Beginning Stages of……Awesomeness!
The Polyphonic Spree are one of the most underrated bands of the last 20-years. My favorite tracks off their debut album have shifted over the years. Upon last go-around, ‘Have a Day/Celebratory’, ‘Days Like This Keep Me Warm’, ‘Hanging Around the Day, Pt. 2’, and ‘Light & Day/Reach For The Sun’ were the standouts. I’m not a fan of the 36-minute final track, ‘A Long Day’, even after several honest attempts. You will need a lot of patience to get through it…or just skip it like I usually do. Forget what I said earlier about Thom Yorke’s vocals, he sounds perfect on Kid A. Or maybe his vocals are a better fit for the often-sparse electronic soundscape? This album is holding up like few have.

When Jim James sings “We are the innovators, they are the imitators “ on the opening track, ‘Wordless Chorus’, I nod in agreement. There have been a lot of My Morning Jacket imitators since Z debuted.
‘Gideon’, ‘It Beats For You’, and ‘Lay Low’ are the most underrated tracks on this underrated album. ‘Wordless Chorus’, ‘Off The Record’, ‘Knot Comes Loose’, and ‘Dondante’ are all great too. [First added to this chart: 04/04/2017]

I'm a sucker for beautiful unique female voices, like Joni, Nico, Kim Deal, Johnette Napolitano from Concrete Blonde, Mary Hansen & Laetitia Sadier duel vocals with Stereolab, and Neko Case's solo work and with the New Pornographers. This is my favorite of her solo work. 'Margaret Vs. Pauline', 'Hold On, Hold, On' and 'The Needle Has Landed' are my current favorite tracks.

3/10/19...the day that Dear Catastrophe Waitress passed Tigermilk to become my favorite Belle & Sebastian album. It has really held up after 15+ years of listening. ‘Asleep On A Sunbeam’ and ‘Stay Loose’ are two of my favorite songs of the decade. Both are highly underrated.

I can’t seem to help but love this album. ‘Up From Below’, ‘Home’, ‘Come In Please’, and ‘Om Nashi Me’ are current favorites, but the entire album is underrated.
