Sufjan’s 2010 concert at the Paramount in Oakland is still one of my all-time favorites. It was also where I realized that a significant number of Sufjan fans weren’t as into The Age Of Adz as I was. There was more than one comment overheard about liking Sufjan’s “banjo songs” a lot better than “this stuff”. There’s not much if any banjo on this album, but tons of everything else, including some beautiful vocals from Sufjan…including the autotuned verses.
Early listens ahead of that October 2010 Oakland show had me loving ‘Too Much’, ‘Age Of Adz’, ‘Vesuvius’, and the epic ‘Impossible Soul’, the last of which was especially amazing hearing live for the first time at that beautiful old Art Deco theater. Since then, most of the other songs have also become favorites, including the underrated ‘Get Real Get Right’, ‘All For Myself’ and ‘I Want To Be Well’, the last of which is right up there with ‘Impossible Soul’ as contenders for best tracks of the decade. This album opened my ears and mind to hip hop. It caused me to seek out and listen to classic hip hop albums I never heard before, and relisten to those that I had. My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy is still my favorite.
