Top 100 Greatest Music Albums by glynspsa (2019)

« View previous chartView next chart »

This list has gone through many incarnations. I used to care if people liked it so I had it tweaked a certain way then I tried just one album per artist for a while. this however is my purest 100 Favorite Music albums of all-time. I didn't really know how to define best so i am going with the 100 that bring me the most pleasure and or make me think in a productive way.

Purple RainUnited States Prince And The Revolution
Fantastic Album has been among my personal favorites since the first time I heard most of the songs in The Movie Purple Rain. Explosive and powerful, Prince at his all-time best. I hope he is resting in peace he gave a lot of beauty and passion to this world.

Born In The U.S.A.United States Bruce Springsteen
One of the very few times the masses got it right. this album sold tons of copies and it is deserved. the title cut mistakingly seen by some as a patriotic anthem is a biting criticism of Reagan Era america. Catchy sure but still has a certain depth to go with the typical Springsteen charm.

Radio K.A.O.S.United Kingdom Roger Waters
Wonderful concept album from the master of the genre. Haunting a lyrically marvelous journey with some fantastic musicians. The horns are a welcome dimension to the sounds. Has a certain Waters feel to the effort but sounds new and different at the same time. Truly a personal favorite and one that reminds me of some good friends.

Straight Outta ComptonUnited States N.W.A
The album that brought Gangster Rap to the masses. Gritty urban tales from one of Raps most important and influential groups. Ice Cube, Dr. Dre and Easy E are three of Rap histories most important figures add MC Ren and DJ Yella and the talent is unsurpassed in hip hop except for maybe Wu-Tang. F#@% the Police got them on the FBI radar and all the controversy helped make this record a legend. The title track is easily one of the genres best tracks.

An amazing hits filled masterpiece. Money for nothing is legendary and one of the most identifiable songs of the decade with a fantastic assist from Sting on background vocals. Knopfler is at his writing and playing best. A truly decade defining album. This is terrific quality music.

Appetite For DestructionUnited States Guns N' Roses
A seminal records of 80's rock n roll. Slash has some of the best guitar playing ever on this album. The solos in sweet child of mine and paradise city are terrific hair raising showcases and Axl is at the height of his powers just commanding the songs with some of the best rock vocals. Hollywood to the core a truly legendary record.

1999United States Prince
Funky sexy and bad ass album with some of my favorite Prince songs. Hard Hitting and powerful. I can remember knowing this album was dirty as a kid but not really knowing why. It just oozes Prince from beginning to end a classic and as definitive as any album he would make.

If I included more than 1 album per artist in my chart, it would have something like 60% in common with yours! Excellent choices, some old-school favorites, and a couple of suggestions that were new to me and I will check out.

Excellent chart. Some real groovy juice. This is music you can really feel and I like how it's quite unpredictable but still made of albums I feel like most who like music should easily appreciate.

Not much in common (only 8 albums & 8 artists) but phenomenal choices in rock, hip-hop, funk, soul, prog, jazz, etc. Super rich and inclusive. Great notes too. Loved seeing Cat Stevens at #12, he was one of my first loves and that album was among the first few I owned. I saved some of your rap selections to listen to later. None of your choices seemed cliche (Even Beatles at #1), I'm glad you chose this method of entry. Saving this chart to my favorites.

I liked reading your notes. They are really sensible. And I liked what you wrote about trying to make an honest chart about what are REALLY your favorite albums, rather than what you think SHOULD be your favorite albums. But even that isn't as easy as it sounds, as I've discovered.
