Three reactions to this album:
1. Blown away/gobsmacked. It stabs me right in the heart in a way that very few contemporary albums do (Carrie and Lowell, perhaps).
2. Anger (slight), at myself for having let Ogilala pass me by when it was originally released 3 years ago. This is also related to...
3. Shame. While I never entirely bought the media's portrayal of Corgan as some kind of rock-god-turned-crazy-hermit, Syd Barrett-type figure, the "Wacky Billy Corgan"-stories provided plenty of entertainment, so his Joe Rogan interview from a couple of years ago was a massive eye opener in that it gave me something I had been previously lacking - namely context. No, Billy Corgan hasn't gone into wrestling because he's a massive goofball, he's been a wrestling fan since childhood and has a genuine passion and love for the sport. I get it now. In fact, in virtually every interview I've seen or read he comes across as a very down-to-earth, affable guy, somebody who regularly and enthusiastically communicates with fans and listeners via social media, and if he ever gives lip to anyone it's usually for a good reason.
But that's the thing with applying labels isn't it. It reduces people to one-dimensional stereotypes. A "sensitive" musician who likes "macho" things like wrestling or the NBA simply does not compute, particularly for journalists who are required to box everything into a neat 1000-word story. Human beings are complex and three-dimensional, yet society wants to strip us down to mere superficialities.
So I guess I owe Corgan something of an apology, for letting the media's portrayal of him cloud my judgment of his music and taking my eye off the ball when it mattered. But better late than never, I suppose. [First added to this chart: 10/16/2020]
