Produced by Gordon Raphael. First of all, I much prefer the American cover of this album. Secondly, I love the way the vocals are not just out front, but completely eating the microphone in your face. Third, this is a really great collection of songs, a sudden bolt of hope for the future just when it seemed like rock was on its last legs. Numero four, one of the best damn debut albums you will ever hear. And a big fifth for an album that never ceases to move me, be it my feet or my other many senses. Great stuff. Produced by Ethan Johns. Underrated and often forgotten, the third and final Whiskeytown album was released almost two years after the band had broken up. It was released finally to help bolster sales for Ryan Adam's Gold album. There is true greatness here: "Jacksonville Skyline", "Don't Be Sad", and many more. Rumor has it that these are the best out of over 100 songs recorded for the album over a 3 year period. Whiskeytown was a great band. Pneumonia is a beautiful and forgotten classic. Produced by Band Of Horses and Phil Ek. One of my favorite bands, this group can pretty much do no wrong in my eyes. Between Everything All The Time and Cease To Begin, I'm in musical heaven. This one has "The Funeral", "The Great Salt Lake", "St. Augustine"...how can you possibly go wrong? Haunting vocals, fine guitar work, great songwriting...all the things I look for in a great rock album. But Band Of Horses is more than just a rock band, and albums like Everything All The Time are more than just great. Timeless. [First added to this chart: 02/23/2013]

Produced by James Mercer and The Shins. Who said nothing good ever came out of Albuquerque? The Shins debut album is divine, and made them immediately one of my favorite bands. "New Slang" is the best kind of pop song, "Caring Is Creepy" is fantastic, and the rest of this album is as solid as you will ever find. I've spent time in Albuquerque...it's a wonder these guys survived, and it's a blessing they turned out as great as they have. And their future albums are really good as well. Produced by Kevin Shirley. After so many years away from truly rocking with Led Zeppelin, Jimmy Page returns with a band that can keep up with him...The Black Crowes. Not all of the thunder of Zep is back, but there's enough of it. And even though Chris Robinson is clearly no Robert Plant, the real star of the show is Page. And Page delivers. The monster riffs, the crazy solos are all here, and all of the great songs are still very much intact, thank you very much. The tour was short lived, but at least someone got it all down for us to hear. [First added to this chart: 12/04/2011]

Produced by Mitchell Froom, Jon Brion & Tony Visconti. Great vocal harmonies are an important part of my life, and no one pulls them off more excitingly than Tim and Neil Finn. This album brings the best of Woodface, and every other thing they did together into one fantastic vocal album. The Finn's are the modern day Everly Brothers...they should record together more. They should record together all the time. If you sing, this is an album that shows you how it should be done. [First added to this chart: 12/07/2011]

Produced by Dennis Herring. No idea what Modest Mouse was until "Float On" skewed its way into my brain in 2004. Discovering this band has been a joy, including this album, which is full of great and quirky Modest Mouse gems. This was a gateway album to the rest of their discography, for which I will be forever thankful. I know some people are disappointed by this album. I am not one of them. In fact, I believe that this album is worthy to stand next to anything else the band has done. [First added to this chart: 01/30/2012]

Produced by Josh Homme & Eric Valentine. A road trip from Los Angeles to Joshua Tree via car radio. Most likely late at night. This thrilling album never eases up, and almost eats your face at "No One Knows", a song that would have made mid 70's Jimmy Page proud. Having Dave Grohl on board playing drums doesn't hurt, and having a great set of songs make greatness possible, and greatness happens. Moreso than any other Queens album, this is a keeper, a must have, a monster. [First added to this chart: 12/08/2011]

Rating metrics: Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some charts can have several thousand ratings)

This chart has a Bayesian average rating of 83.7/100, a mean average of 80.9/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 83.0/100. The standard deviation for this chart is 18.3.

When I think of the 2000s, I think of punk, post-grunge, and alternative rock. That's almost nonexistent here, or at least ones that I like. I hate country, so we clearly have very different tastes but I don't care. There are some good ones like Green Day, The Killers, Weezer, Modest Mouse, Gorillaz etc., but that's few and far between. Overall, pretty boring and flat.

I couldn't agree more with your decision to list Cold Roses at #1, as it's definitely the album from the 2000s that has meant the most to me. Just a fantastic rock album, bringing together elements that remind me of much of the rock that I loved in the seventies: Grateful Dead and the Rolling Stones especially. I also love Funeral (I know everyone does, but it's for good reason), The Dirty South, Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, and many others from your list. Tons of great Americana here--a fantastic list.

Great chart, love the alt-country feel. Ryan Adams' catalogue is very underrated so good to see the representation here.

I haven't listened to many of the albums so I can't judge completely. However your comments are great, you are a Jayhawks fan like me (I wish we lived in that world where everyone loved RDM), you include other artists and bands I like like Wilco (Being There is great), Muse (you must include OOS!) or The Shins and I see no album I dislike so congrats for the chart.

Man this chart is awesome. 23 albums in common with mine, but i love more than half of the albums on this chart. Never could quite get in to Gomez, maybe hes due for an other listen. Also, havent listened to most of the later stuff by older artists. Anyway, great list!

Good chart mostly, but missing Kid A for certain and In Rainbows at 56? It's better than that for sure.
