Produced by Gomez. This band gets overlooked a lot, especially in the States. But I love a band that has three singers and four songwriters as strong as this, and In Our Gun, their third album, is a gem. "Shot Shot" was the obvious hit here, but the rest is never boring and as well written and performed as anything else you'll find. Ben Ottwell has been compared (a bit unfairly) to Eddie Vedder, but even though he has a bit of that quality to his voice, his songs are much more adventurous...as is all of the band's work. Produced by Steve Earle and Ray Kennedy. There would be no alt-country without Steve Earle, and the career of Steve Earle would be incomplete without Transcendental Blues. This is simply a joy of an album that circles around the romping centerpiece, "The Galway Girl". Earle, on his ninth album, still has it in spades...his songwriting has not faded one but, and his feel for what he does has not lost an ounce of passion. This is a must have Steve Earle album...and you must have Steve Earle albums. [First added to this chart: 12/07/2011]

No production credit. "The Picture" shows that Jay Farrar can be upbeat if he wants to be. The Search has Farrar re-inventing his band once again, with really exceptional results. The simplicity of "Slow Hearse", the classic Son Volt theme of the excellent "Methamphetamine", fine front to back songwriting, the perfection of the band as a whole. Son Volt's albums are all pretty much great, but this one came out at a time that made it particularly special to me. This one by a nose over them all except for Trace. Produced by John Alagia. An underneath the radar, moderately successful artist, Yamagata's debut, Happenstance, is one of those albums that brings a smile to my face for reasons that aren't immediately obvious. She's a good songwriter, and has a warm and welcoming voice, and seems to be nothing amazing...yet I always come back for more of this record. It's consistently good, and great in ways I haven't yet figured out. Maybe someday I will...but I'm not going to think about it too much. Just enjoy, dammit. [First added to this chart: 12/06/2011]

Produced by Jack White. Recorded in less than a week, the third album by The White Stripes is yet another strong entry in the Jack White catalog. "Fell In Love With A Girl" leads a solid track list that includes the excellent "Hotel Yorba", "Dead Leaves And The Dirty Ground", and even the sweet "We're Going To Be Friends". I once didn't care a bit for The White Stripes...now, I can't imagine my library would be nearly as good without them. All of their work is well worth having. [First added to this chart: 11/30/2012]

Produced by Adam Kasper and Eddie Vedder. In 2007, Pearl Jam frontman Eddie Vedder had still not made a solo album. That changed when Sean Penn handpicked Vedder to write and perform music for his film Into The Wild. The stripped down songs are played almost exclusively by Vedder, and are based on scenes from the movie. It's really a beautiful album, and makes you wonder why he waited so damn long to make an album of his own. I guess it's because Vedder has always been a team player. Produced by Dave Sardy. When I first heard this album, I hated it. But it's been growing on me ever since. You can't think too much about the lyrics...but musically, particularly guitarist Andrew Stockdale, there's a lot going on here. "Woman" was the hit, evoking comparisons to Led Zeppelin. But there's a lot more here than just that. There are instrumental adventures all over this album, making it a surprising and more than solid debut. Not much since, but this one is a keeper. Rating metrics: Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some charts can have several thousand ratings)

This chart has a Bayesian average rating of 83.7/100, a mean average of 80.9/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 83.0/100. The standard deviation for this chart is 18.3.

When I think of the 2000s, I think of punk, post-grunge, and alternative rock. That's almost nonexistent here, or at least ones that I like. I hate country, so we clearly have very different tastes but I don't care. There are some good ones like Green Day, The Killers, Weezer, Modest Mouse, Gorillaz etc., but that's few and far between. Overall, pretty boring and flat.

I couldn't agree more with your decision to list Cold Roses at #1, as it's definitely the album from the 2000s that has meant the most to me. Just a fantastic rock album, bringing together elements that remind me of much of the rock that I loved in the seventies: Grateful Dead and the Rolling Stones especially. I also love Funeral (I know everyone does, but it's for good reason), The Dirty South, Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, and many others from your list. Tons of great Americana here--a fantastic list.

Great chart, love the alt-country feel. Ryan Adams' catalogue is very underrated so good to see the representation here.

I haven't listened to many of the albums so I can't judge completely. However your comments are great, you are a Jayhawks fan like me (I wish we lived in that world where everyone loved RDM), you include other artists and bands I like like Wilco (Being There is great), Muse (you must include OOS!) or The Shins and I see no album I dislike so congrats for the chart.

Man this chart is awesome. 23 albums in common with mine, but i love more than half of the albums on this chart. Never could quite get in to Gomez, maybe hes due for an other listen. Also, havent listened to most of the later stuff by older artists. Anyway, great list!

Good chart mostly, but missing Kid A for certain and In Rainbows at 56? It's better than that for sure.
