Produced by Brendan O'Brien and Pearl Jam. This album debuted at number one and stayed there for five weeks...and Pearl Jam did absolutely zero promo work for it. That's how huge this band was in the early 90's. Tasked with trying to follow up their debut album Ten, Pearl Jam responded by making an album that was NOT Ten Part Two, but rather a strong collection of songs. This album has "Go", "Glorified G", "Daughter", "Rearviewmirror"...and it's unfortunately rarely given the credit for being simply a great album that it deserves. Produced by Davitt Sigerson, Tori Amos, Eric Rosse & Ian Stanley. The song that got me here was "Crucify", but the rest is just as good. More than any of the other angry women of rock who came afterwards, Tori got it right. She didn't have to say she'd mess you up...you could really hear it in her voice. Little Earthquakes is a great collection of songs, one she's had a tough time beating. An amazing solo debut, and miles from her Y Kant Tori Read fiasco. She is hotter than ever before or since right here. [First added to this chart: 12/05/2011]

Produced by Paul Q. Kolderie & Sean Slade. Maybe the single most important alt-country album ever made. The title later became the name of the musical movement it represented, and the music has been an endless inspiration to every alt-country band since. Jay Farrar and Jeff Tweedy sound like amateurs, their brand of country is puzzling, and nothing sounds like it should work...but every bit of it does. A brilliant, rough as sandpaper and perfect debut album. An absolutely must have. [First added to this chart: 02/20/2012]

Produced by Paul Leary and David Kahne. Ska punk was pretty big in Southern California in the 1990's, and Sublime was a really big part of that. This album, haunted by the death of lead singer Bradley Nowell, is actually a pretty terrific summer soundtrack. "Santeria", "What I Got", and "Doin' Time" lead a strong group of songs that has made this album a rightful legend. This is dismissed as being a novelty by a lot of people...don't believe the hype. This is really a very terrific album, and it's a lot of fun. [First added to this chart: 11/26/2012]

Produced by Brian Paulson. One of the truly classic albums of alt-country. The last album by Uncle Tupelo is the culmination of Jay Farrar and Jeff Tweedy's journey to discover and reinvent country music, and the gems are endless. Anodyne should be alongside the great albums of the 90's. Maybe someday, alt-country will get its due. And when it does, this will be at the top of the heap. "Slate", "Acuff/Rose", "Give Back The Keys To My Heart"...every track here is perfection. [First added to this chart: 12/04/2011]

Produced by George Drakoulias. Another great and ignored album by the most melodic of the Minnesota bands. Hollywood Town Hall is the real coming out of The Jayhawks, with Mark Olson and Gary Louris proving to be a formidable songwriting team. "Sister Cry", "Crowded In The Wings", "Wichita"...this album is loaded. The harmonies are impeccable, the songs are perfect, and the playing is as good as it gets. If you haven't discovered The Jayhawks, you are truly missing out on a great band. [First added to this chart: 12/04/2011]

Rating metrics: Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some charts can have several thousand ratings)

This chart has a Bayesian average rating of 86.9/100, a mean average of 85.9/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 87.1/100. The standard deviation for this chart is 17.1.

This is an excellent list. Lots of "alt-country" here, which is much more Replacements-Meets-Bruce Springsteen than traditional folk or country.

I can't really give a good rating because I haven't listened to 96 of these albums, but I just want to say that I am convinced that Romanelli and AM are the same person

I really appreciate some of the more personal picks. This is a really good chart. 14 albums in common is pretty good. Perhaps one day I'll check out Uncle Tupelo.

Really love the detailed notes and careful selections!! I still feel it's a little too focused on American alt-rock for my liking however, would be nice to see some electronic releases/more hip hop besides Public Enemy at no.73!
