Overall chart rank: #1. Produced by George Martin. The last album The Beatles recorded somehow turned out to be one of their very best. The bits and pieces McCartney envisioned as song suites somehow worked, and Lennon's singular songs are among his best work. George Harrison's songs show how much he'd progressed into a rival of the band's songwriting team. Abbey Road is a miracle of 1969 modern technology: it sounds as clean as anything coming out today. One of the most entertaining albums ever made. [First added to this chart: 12/04/2011]

Produced by George Martin. The growth of The Beatles as songwriters and recording artists between Help! and Rubber Soul was staggering. Rubber Soul is packed with great songs, many of them acoustic. This is the album that inspired Pet Sounds, and one of the albums that moved me far enough to first pick up a guitar and start writing my own songs. That Rubber Soul MIGHT be the greatest Beatles album speaks volumes about how great they really were. This album is beautiful, and it's scary good. [First added to this chart: 12/04/2011]

Produced by George Martin. This was my first real exposure to The Beatles...what a ride! This album is like nothing else before it. You can feel the tension in it, and you can hear, more than on any of their other works, how different they were as individuals. This always seems a bit sad to me, but it's also a band stretching out in directions that no one had dared to ever record before. A great set of songs, and a highly emotional album. This made me love The Beatles. I don't regret it for a minute. [First added to this chart: 12/04/2011]

Produced by George Martin. The growth of The Beatles from Help! to Rubber Soul to Revolver is staggering. That it took place in the span of a year and a half is amazing. It baffles me when people say that Revolver is nothing special. This album is special in every way. They took the under three minute pop song format and turned it upside down, into something it had never been before. Hard to believe that "Eleanor Rigby" clocks in at 2:08. "Tomorrow Never Knows" at 2:57. How do you cram that much experience into such a short period of time? Genius, I say. Genius. [First added to this chart: 12/05/2011]

Produced by George Martin. Originally a 19 minute EP, this was released to American audiences as a stunning album to accompany a pretty terrible TV show. And while it's a rare Beatles album with two weaker tracks (the instrumental "Flying" and "The Fool On The Hill"), the rest more than makes up for it. "I Am The Walrus", "All You Need Is Love", the 1-2 punch of "Strawberry Fields" and "Penny Lane"...it's tough to beat this one out, even though it wasn't intended to come out the way it did. Produced by George Martin. The first Beatles album to contain all original songs, A Hard Day's Night is the album most dominated by John Lennon. With only three McCartney tracks and one by Harrison, the rest is all John. Into his band, into being a songwriter, and cranking out classics. Paul may have peaked later on, but Lennon peaked here. For this one album, The Beatles really WERE John's band. And it was a great album. "I'll Cry Instead". "You Can't Do That". "If I Fell". John at his very best. [First added to this chart: 12/05/2011]

Produced by George Martin. Seven songs from the film with the same name, and seven more for good measure. It's not the best work by The Beatles, but even their lesser albums rate high because that's the standard they set. Two covers and two songs by George Harrison leaves room for 10 Lennon-McCartney originals, which includes "Yesterday", "Ticket To Ride", and "The Night Before". Much better than the film, and much better than what anyone else in rock was doing at the time, Help! remains a classic album, an essential part of any Beatles collection. Produced by George Martin. Along with Pet Sounds, one of the most influencial albums of all time. For me, it's showing its age a bit right now...but that doesn't mean it's not an amazing album, nor does it mean that I don't still love it as much as ever. Some songs will never grow old, like "A Day In The Life". Some, like "With A Little Help From My Friends", sound dated. This one moves up and down for me...someday, it will be higher again. That day might be tomorrow...you never know. [First added to this chart: 12/07/2011]

Rating metrics: Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some charts can have several thousand ratings)

This chart is rated in the top 3% of all charts on BestEverAlbums.com. This chart has a Bayesian average rating of 89.9/100, a mean average of 88.7/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 91.0/100. The standard deviation for this chart is 16.1.
