Produced by Bob Dylan and The Band. Recorded mostly in Los Angeles in 1974, this is the kind of concert that should happen more often. You get a bunch of songs by just The Band, a handful of solo Dylan tunes, and a whole lot of the magic that was everyone playing all together. This album is often overlooked, and is highly underrated...it may not be perfect, but that wouldn't be a whole lot of fun, now, would it? Part of what can make a show like this so exciting are the flaws, just as much as the shining moments. A historic recording. [First added to this chart: 12/04/2011]

Produced by Bob Ezrin, David Gilmour, James Guthrie and Roger Waters. I went through a long period where I couldn't stand this album...probably because of the sound of Waters' ego growing with each song. But I can't deny that this is a great sounding and amazing piece of work. A real concept album, a trip down the road of madness and loaded with incredible moments. It isn't sprawling like Dark Side or Wish You Were Here, but that's part of it...they show that they could do it even in quick, short bursts as well. Well played! Produced by Jimmy Page. You may think I have this ranked too low...you may be right. It's not that I don't love this album (technically untitled, dammit), it's just that I don't hear it a lot. It's one of those special albums that I don't like to spoil with repeated listenings, because I want it to always be as special as it always has been. This may not make sense to you, but it really does, with this album especially, for me. Every song here is special to me, and I plan to keep it that way. [First added to this chart: 12/04/2011]

Produced by Phil Spector. I wish this was a no holds barred, 5 disc box set with every scrap of fighting and song fragments recorded during these sessions. But I still love Let It Be. It's the sound of a band falling apart, and of Paul McCartney slowly alienating himself from his mates. And yet there is still enough in the tank for tracks like "I Me Mine", "Get Back", "I've Got A Feeling", and "Two Of Us". A curious and sad way to say goodbye to a once indestructible band. Produced by Neil Young, David Briggs & Kendall Pacios. Originally started as a soundtrack to a screenplay by Dean Stockwell that was never written, this album is a thing of beauty. Some of Neil's greatest melodies are here, plus the romping Southern Man make this his crowning achievement as an album. He never sang higher or sweeter than on the title track, and songs like Tell Me Why, Only Love Can Break Your Heart and I Believe In You are among his best work. A masterpiece through and through. Produced by Bob Seger, Punch Andrews, and The Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section. The follow up to Night Moves, a pretty daunting task for Bob Seger, was a resounding success. Seger's formula for success, great rock and roll songs guided by strong piano and gritty vocals, continues here with a lineup that includes "Hollywood Nights", "we've Got Tonight", "Still The Same" and "Old Time Rock And Roll". Proving he could handle nationwide fame on more than just a single album, Seger gives notice with this one that he's here to stay. Lucky for us. [First added to this chart: 09/02/2012]

Rating metrics: Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some charts can have several thousand ratings)

This chart is rated in the top 4% of all charts on BestEverAlbums.com. This chart has a Bayesian average rating of 89.1/100, a mean average of 88.7/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 89.6/100. The standard deviation for this chart is 10.9.

Too much emphasis on classic rock for a higher rating than 80 sorry. Not a single German album in a decade that was defining for the German music scene??
