Produced by Tom Dowd. What should have been the grand entrance of The Allman Brothers Band as superstars became a sad monument to Brother Duane. He died while the album was being recorded, and while his guitar can be heard on several tracks, it's his spirit that allows the album to be a triumph. The band carried on for him, and the result is a beautiful headstone for one of the greatest guitarsists of all time. Eat A Peach is a great, emotional album, and the pinnacle of what Southern rock was meant to be. [First added to this chart: 12/04/2011]

Produced by Roy Thomas Baker. This album may sound squeaky clean and spotless, but The Cars is a great debut album filled with great songs. The real secret weapon here is Elliot Easton with what are easily the greatest guitar licks of the New Wave era. Ric Ocasek and Benjamin Orr split the lead vocal duties, and Ocasek's songwriting is flawless. This is one of the top albums of New Wave, and a staggering debut effort. This album still sounds great today, and my collection would be naked without it. [First added to this chart: 12/04/2011]

Produced by Al Kooper. Say what you want about "Free Bird". You don't really hear it all the time on the radio, and the truth is, it's a great song. And this is an excellent debut album. "Simple Man", "Tuesday's Gone", "Gimme Three Steps", "I Ain't The One", AND "Free Bird"...all on one glorious disc. Skynyrd picked up Southern rock from the ashes of the Allmans and carried it proudly until they suffered their own tragedy. But they were great for awhile, and their debut album is powerful stuff. Produced by John Fogerty. The worst album cover of all time hides one of the best rock and roll albums ever made. The height of everything that was great about Creedence, Cosmo's Factory contains a bunch of Fogerty's greatest songs, along with some nice classic covers, including a full 11 minutes of the glorious "I Heard It Through The Grapevine". At the sixties end and the dawn of the seventies, this was maybe the greatest band on earth. This album is living proof that they really were on the same level as The Beatles & Stones...for awhile. Produced by Geoff Haslam, Shel Kagan & The Velvet Underground. A lot of people dismiss Loaded, but I think it deserves a place next to the rest of the Velvet's work. Even above it. I know...Cale is gone, as is Mo Tucker. It's a Lou Reed album, but it shows that the Velvets could have done great pop music if they had stuck around. Some of Reed's best songs..."Sweet Jane", "Rock & Roll", and the best Velvet's song ever in "Who Loves The Sun", the saddest piece of candy ever. [First added to this chart: 12/04/2011]

Produced by Bob Seger, Punch Andrews, and The Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section. The follow up to Night Moves, a pretty daunting task for Bob Seger, was a resounding success. Seger's formula for success, great rock and roll songs guided by strong piano and gritty vocals, continues here with a lineup that includes "Hollywood Nights", "we've Got Tonight", "Still The Same" and "Old Time Rock And Roll". Proving he could handle nationwide fame on more than just a single album, Seger gives notice with this one that he's here to stay. Lucky for us. [First added to this chart: 09/02/2012]

Rating metrics: Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some charts can have several thousand ratings)

This chart is rated in the top 5% of all charts on BestEverAlbums.com. This chart has a Bayesian average rating of 89.0/100, a mean average of 88.5/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 89.5/100. The standard deviation for this chart is 10.9.

Too much emphasis on classic rock for a higher rating than 80 sorry. Not a single German album in a decade that was defining for the German music scene??

Can't argue with any of these picks. Deja Vu is a wonderful pick as #1. Cars, in my opinion, don't get enough love, and plenty-o-Zep!
