Produced by Bob Ezrin, David Gilmour, James Guthrie and Roger Waters. I went through a long period where I couldn't stand this album...probably because of the sound of Waters' ego growing with each song. But I can't deny that this is a great sounding and amazing piece of work. A real concept album, a trip down the road of madness and loaded with incredible moments. It isn't sprawling like Dark Side or Wish You Were Here, but that's part of it...they show that they could do it even in quick, short bursts as well. Well played! Produced by Jimmy Iovine and Tom Petty. Tom Petty has made a career out of albums with a great track or two and a bunch of filler. The closest he ever got to making a truly great album from start to finish was Damn The Torpedoes. In fact, this album IS great. Petty and the band have the requisite hits in "Refugee", "Here Comes My Girl", "Even The Losers" and "Don't Do Me Like That"...but there's also great lesser known songs like "Louisiana Rain" and "Century City". TP&THB at their very best. [First added to this chart: 12/04/2011]

Produced by Neil Young, David Briggs and Tim Mulligan. A strange sort of a live album. Most of the tracks were recorded live, with the audience noise mostly removed, and studio overdubs added. Two of the songs are new studio tracks ("Pocohantas" and "Sail Away") But the album works on the strength of the performances, and on the strength of the material. And because the concept of a working band on the road somehow overshadows the trickery. Somehow, a great album. But that's just what Neil has always been good at. Produced by The Damned and Roger Armstrong. How can a band have a major comeback and a second coming only three years after forming? That's what The Damned did. After two straight up hardcore punk albums, they broke up and regrouped for Machine Gun Etiquette, a really tasty and sometimes strange ("White Rabbit", "Ballroom Blitz") album of very tasty stuff. How can you go wrong with a bassist named Rat Scabies and a singer who thinks he's a vampire? The answer is, you simply cannot. [First added to this chart: 12/04/2011]

Produced by Jimmy Page. The last Zeppelin album gets a lot of hate, but there are some really great moments on it, and it's worthy of being alongside the rest of their discography. "In The Evening", "Fool In The Rain", and "Carouselambra" are top notch songs, but it's the Robert Plant vocal on "I'm Gonna Crawl" that's the real shining moment here. It may be his best vocal. Led Zeppelin was moving into a new direct here, and that's something that I think should be embraced, not criticized. [First added to this chart: 12/04/2011]

Rating metrics: Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some charts can have several thousand ratings)

This chart is rated in the top 4% of all charts on BestEverAlbums.com. This chart has a Bayesian average rating of 89.1/100, a mean average of 88.7/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 89.6/100. The standard deviation for this chart is 10.9.

Too much emphasis on classic rock for a higher rating than 80 sorry. Not a single German album in a decade that was defining for the German music scene??
