Album 1-100. Best experiences so far. Positions can vary a lot though...

It's the albums I like the most, and not the albums I think are the best, and that's part of why it's so difficult to compose. I'm never 100% sure. Some albums are so 'special', 'original' placed in the musical history, that it get mixed up with 'love'.

I guess I have a lot of opinions, but mostly politically correct. I don't have much conspiracy theories, but love to hear/read them. A sign of freedom to evolve and believe in them, I suppose.

But my theories on music and especially "TASTE" is maybe to obvious to even bother about. It stems from following charts when young and discovering that the charts "lied". It was not the greatest song or album being number one, only sometimes. So, I made my own charts. And here I am. Still searching for the joy only the discovering of a new artist brings. This site is perfect for that. This last year has brought me so much new and old music I don't know were to start. I missed out on so much while living life, studying and reading literature (my largest hobby, besides music)

A typical example is "In Rainbows" with I quickly dismissed since I expected something else. Seeing all comments and ratings made me listen to It, until it evoked "that" excellent feeling.

To my small "theory"... It concerned TASTE, and is supposed to come from within the piece of art itself. Like a line of beauty, or quality that is superior from less great pieces...

I do think it exists. It's more God than anything else in the world, since it has got a mystical experience to It, a shared one, and a very personal. And people do like to share their experiences concerning TASTE.

And/But like religion (the theory behind God) is very hard to capture. The same is true for TASTE (and surely for most phenomena). We become influenced by what's written about It, and who is loving it. If a certain group of people with a certain way of living (say hillbillies, snobs, or some other kind of generalisation) enjoys this music, arts or religion, we either identify with them, oppose, reject or try to get closer and try to understand.

Music is unique since its widespread and easy to examine. It's you and the piece of music, and you (can be) free! Not to many will make you change, even though some years of your life you might be more susceptible to others view of your TASTE in music.

Thus, this is the core of my theory. I guess it's a psychological theory, maybe? Cognition in form of others and your view of this or that music will affect your immediate (primary) emotion and later on your deeper and more complex emotion (maybe not secondary emotion, since it means something else). Cognition though can serve to enhance these two described emotional responses in an international way, or develop secondary emotions based on other people's view. You become weak in the presence of "childish" emotions and subdue to the group that you want to belong. The same relationship is seen between music and lyrics. Sometimes they really do enhance each other, and blend, so that you really don't know what it is that you like about, let's say Bob Dylan. If your weak for lyrics you will increase your emotional response. If not so, Dylan might still be good, or simply plain. That this cognitive-emotional interaction is the base for TASTE seems probable for me. The nobel prize for Dylan is a fantastic symptom of it. Men around 55 years, giving the prize to a decent songwriter (one of the better in my view, but one equal with many others). These men remembers their golden years when their hormones peaked and they were in love, had passions, anger and political ideals. It's all channelled or evoked by the tunes from their hero.

And finally. The most difficult part maybe. Sometimes your emotional system is overrun by one great feeling, or no feeling, and that's when you need your group? And as a parenthesis we all have different emotional resources and settings of course. TASTE differs to. It's the personal part, the subjectivity. You and the song. You and the book. You and the painting. You and your partner.

I don't mind that much what people say, it's often how it's said and why it's said that might bother me.

Rating metrics: Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some charts can have several thousand ratings)

This chart is rated in the top 9% of all charts on BestEverAlbums.com. This chart has a Bayesian average rating of 88.1/100, a mean average of 88.4/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 88.7/100. The standard deviation for this chart is 6.6.

Your introduction says it all ~ how are our tastes, preferences in artists/albums conceived? Uniquely! I liked your chart and respect your choices. We only have 7 albums in common ~ although considering we have had over 200000 albums to chose from over more than 60 years of modern recorded music ~ we have 7 shared moments of being immersed in someone else's creative endeavour and coming out of it and saying "that album is exceptional". Thank you for sharing your chart.

67 of these I have in my collection. 4 of them in my top 100. It is about what I like and not what I think. Well put. I so much agree. And now I'll make a playlist with those Swedish gems.

Extremely interesting chart of itself and very good description to go with it.

A number of the choices are familiar and extremely overrated (The Strokes, Jeff Buckley, Smashing Pumpkins) but even these do not distract too much from the less familiar choices, the diversity of genres included, and the philosophical description that makes for an unusual and good choice for a heading.

That introduction was a refreshing read. Never seen such a take on music taste a bit of a mistery. Maybe I couldn't follow 100%, but interesting nonetheless!

Älskar också dina nationella val ;)

A gorgeous chart, especially love the little vignette for The Boatman's Call, would be great to see more in that vein. Even if a lot of the picks aren't my cup of tea, the effort you've gone in to arranging and describing your picks is astounding. Would be nice to see some hip hop float your way maybe? ...
