Top 100 Greatest Music Albums by cmoshier

*amended (7/12/20): I decided to go with one album per artist just to make it a little more eclectic. The ranking is pretty loose; beyond like the top 25, it's pretty arbitrary. And I'm gonna keep doing the little write ups for each one.

I originally had Crooked Rain here, but I love the stoned disinhibition of Wowee Zowee. It feels like they were sort of off the reservation in a really fun way here. Maybe it's the context, that they had just made an ironic 'bad' 70's rock record with Crooked Rain', but this is the one that stands out most to me as the most joyful and unique. It's profoundly fucking weird that these people ever convened in a room to make music. Is Jaki Liebezeit the best drummer? [First added to this chart: 08/12/2017]

Angry young man music, I can't help it though. It's transcendent. I saw them not too long ago when they were touring the anniversary of the record. As they played 'To Old Friends and New', Patrick Stickles changed the lyric 'woman' to 'student' in 'no matter how brilliant a woman, you're only a kid'. I wonder how many other people took note of that. I thought it was a really beautiful moment; an acknowledgement of a flawed past self, how juvenile you were. Small, but it meant a lot. I've ranted, in life, about how this album never got it's due. I told someone once that it's the Pet Sounds of our generation, which feels like a bit of a stretch in hindsight but there's probably something to it. The mind is there, and it's perfectly executed. It's kind of remarkable that a song like 'Flash Delirium' even works; the 'genre-switching-on-a-dime' thing avoids ever feeling corny or ham-fisted in any way. And you can see that level of precision throughout. [First added to this chart: 03/27/2018]

Rating metrics: Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some charts can have several thousand ratings)

This chart is rated in the top 2% of all charts on BestEverAlbums.com. This chart has a Bayesian average rating of 90.6/100, a mean average of 92.3/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 92.2/100. The standard deviation for this chart is 7.1.

Only 4 albums in common but that is because you employ the one album per artist rule .... I just not brave enough to do that my chart would be decimated if I did that .... but I respect your choices and overall it is a very interesting read

Great chart - love the one album/artist concept; love the comments and how the albums soundtrack key moments in your life; love your sentimental attachment to albums that are real outliers; love how uniquely this chart reflects who you are (no BEA group think here!). Love how you have canvassed the decades. My only criticism would be it is a bit too US heavy - but hey, you were born in the USA. Oh, loved (but don't agree) on your putting Darkness ahead of Born To Run. Got a real kick out of you putting 'Another Self Portrait' ahead of about 20 other Dylan albums. Finally, would have liked to have seen a few more Australian albums in the top 100. Anyway, certainly one of my favourite BEA user charts for sure!

Love Let It Be at number 1 and the Strokes at number 3. One album per artist is tough too. Descriptions also a plus. 100.

Really unique and clearly long-thought-out chart. Love seeing albums like YHF, Born to Run and Loveless in your very eclectic top 20. Just wish there were notes!!
