Top 100 Greatest Music Albums by cmoshier

*amended (7/12/20): I decided to go with one album per artist just to make it a little more eclectic. The ranking is pretty loose; beyond like the top 25, it's pretty arbitrary. And I'm gonna keep doing the little write ups for each one.

Kind of like with Ty Segall and 'Melted', this might kind of a weird favorite of theirs to have. I just love John Dwyer's taste, it's different than mine. Probably the best live band out there right now? The last time they came through New York, I very stupidly microdosed some shrooms at their show and freaked the fuck out. Hell of a show, though. Another one that seems to missed some people. Kim Deal's the greatest, and probably doesn't get enough credit for how much she contributed to the color and mood of the Pixies. Her at her fragmented best. 'Off You' pokes a very specific raw nerve. [First added to this chart: 08/18/2021]

To preface the rest of this list, the sequencing of the albums beyond number 1 is is pretty arbitrary. This is my personal favorite from Miles'; I'm truly not an expert on jazz in any way, but I really don't think anyone comes close to Miles when it comes to fusion. It is so fucking intense, it goes back to this idea of music being something that moves you viscerally rather than intellectually. I'm not shitting on Zappa, but it's just so cerebral to me. I don't think anyone had what Miles had; he was smart enough to know that it wasn't a game of minds. He couldn't help but be what he was, no second guessing. I'm just in awe of this record. Truly, one of the few music moments where the first time I heard it remains crystalline in my memory. It's an overused way to describe music, but this is a ~visceral~ listen the first time. I had no reference for what this was other than the fact that Kurt Cobain liked it. I thought these guys were robots or something. Looking back, and after having read Our Band Could Be Your Life, it feels like a gendered rage. There's a lot you can say about this being of its time. Even as a huge Big Black & Shellac fan, I certainly wouldn't stand behind every move Steve Albini's made; the man himself has copped to having made some ugly choices. But there's something undeniably great and specific about Big Black. [First added to this chart: 09/09/2017]

I mean, it's a mess. But the biggest messes from The Kinks are more compelling than a lot of people at their best. A sprawling post-Sgt. Pepper's, pre-Dark Side of the Moon concept album about British life and history (I think?) by one of the weirdest bands ever. [First added to this chart: 08/23/2017]

Wilco are my Grateful Dead; I haven't exactly worked the analogy out in my head, but it feels true. This record in particular holds a lot of sentimental value for me. The earnest, college boy country of it hit me at the right time in the right way. Wilco is Alex G for your parents? That might make more sense actually. [First added to this chart: 07/12/2020]

I got into Mission of Burma about four years ago, at the height of my musical curiosity. So no real emotional attachment. I think it's impeccably recorded, and seems to lay the groundwork for a lot of the best noise rock of the 90's and after. [First added to this chart: 09/09/2017]

Rating metrics: Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some charts can have several thousand ratings)

This chart is rated in the top 2% of all charts on BestEverAlbums.com. This chart has a Bayesian average rating of 90.6/100, a mean average of 92.3/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 92.2/100. The standard deviation for this chart is 7.1.

Only 4 albums in common but that is because you employ the one album per artist rule .... I just not brave enough to do that my chart would be decimated if I did that .... but I respect your choices and overall it is a very interesting read

Great chart - love the one album/artist concept; love the comments and how the albums soundtrack key moments in your life; love your sentimental attachment to albums that are real outliers; love how uniquely this chart reflects who you are (no BEA group think here!). Love how you have canvassed the decades. My only criticism would be it is a bit too US heavy - but hey, you were born in the USA. Oh, loved (but don't agree) on your putting Darkness ahead of Born To Run. Got a real kick out of you putting 'Another Self Portrait' ahead of about 20 other Dylan albums. Finally, would have liked to have seen a few more Australian albums in the top 100. Anyway, certainly one of my favourite BEA user charts for sure!

Love Let It Be at number 1 and the Strokes at number 3. One album per artist is tough too. Descriptions also a plus. 100.

Really unique and clearly long-thought-out chart. Love seeing albums like YHF, Born to Run and Loveless in your very eclectic top 20. Just wish there were notes!!
