Japandroids are exceptionally good at being very loud. That's not an insult, rather it's a compliment to how they are able to blend the fun of rock with the aggressiveness of punk, and they did that excellently on Celebration Rock. Now, five years later, we finally have the follow-up, and while it's good, it's not what Celebration Rock was. It feels like in the five years since Celebration Rock, Japandroids lost some of their heart and passion, and that comes out in a few songs on this album. That being said, when Japandroids are good, they're very good, and there are some tracks on this album that are every solid. Overall, it's a good album, but not the follow-up I think many people were hoping for. [First added to this chart: 11/14/2017]

Earthen Sea makes what you might call minimal dub techno, but in all honesty, it's not as upbeat as that genre classification would sound. This album is a lot more slowed down (for the most part), and is essentially a somewhat dark ambient album at times with some more upbeat techno-style stuff thrown in. Tracks like "Delicately in the Sunlight" are slow, thoughtful pieces that envelop you with a lush sound. Tracks like "The Flats 1975" are where the beat kicks in and the tempo shoots up a bit, but it's still a subtle beat, the track is muffled, it's not a full-out dance track. It's a solid album with some really interesting and pretty tracks. [First added to this chart: 11/07/2017]

I See You feels like the most cohesive The xx's identity has ever been. Their debut album was a surprise to a lot of people, and I don't think they'll ever truly be able to duplicate it. Coexist felt like it was trying to hard to not live in their debut's shadow, but I See You features the band as a total cohesive unit. "On Hold" is, for me, the best song The xx has ever created. It blends the talents of Oliver Sim and Romy Madley Croft as singers and guitar/bassists with Jamie xx's subtle, yet essential sampling. This doesn't feel like a Jamie xx-dominated album (and it could considering the fame the guy has made for himself now), nor does it feel like an album dominated by Sim and Croft, it's a perfect blend of all three, making it an album that is uniquely The xx, but simultaneously a step forward for the band. Ancient Methods are able to make some really great techno music with this album, blending elements of noise music with percussive sounds, and a few vocal samples. Tracks are built with droning synths, cold percussion, and heavy bass. It's an interesting album with a lot of turns, but forms itself into a cohesive piece that's worth listening to. Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs, one of the most annoying band names to write because I never remember how many "Pigs" are in it (it's seven), owe a lot to Black Sabbath, as just about any and all doom metal bands do. But in particular, Pigs emulate Sabbath in a very distinct way. They're heavier, and they don't copy Sabbath, but you can easily hear the influence. Feed The Rats is a thick, heavy album. It's three tracks, two long, plodding, dirge-like tracks with a brief four-and-a-half minute track aptly titled "Sweet Relief" in between. The opening track, "Psychopomp", has a real space psych feel to it. It's guttural and simultaneously hypnotic. The final track, "Icon", complements "Psychopomp" very well, as it feels like the polar opposite. It starts quiet and then blasts you at the end. Feed The Rats is an album that will drown you in its sound, and luckily, it's something worth drowning in. [First added to this chart: 10/19/2017]

If you can imagine in your mind for a second what a Pond album will sound like, then you know what The Weather sounds like. Believe it or not, this is Pond's seventh album, and it's still a solid album, but it doesn't necessarily do anything to set itself apart from its predecessors. Still though, Pond have a good album here, an atmospheric psych-rock album with some politically-charged lyrics makes for an overall good time. If you like what Pond has done in the past, you'll like this. [First added to this chart: 10/17/2017]
