White Reaper are distinctively a retro-sounding band, and I would imagine that a lot of these songs play really well in a live setting. They've got power and attitude, you can just feel how they'd play this album live with swagger, but as far as a record goes, it's good, if not a bit redundant at times. White Reaper very much stay in their lane, but that's not necessarily a bad thing, because they're good at it. Sure, it can get a little repetitive at times, but overall, it's a solid album. Mac DeMarco has always been known for being goofy and strange, but he's always made good music, and This Old Dog is the most introspective I think he's ever really been on an album. He sheds the goofiness for a serious album that deals with issues like his aging, and his reconciling with his father. This is the most raw we've ever seen DeMarco, it's an album written for a family he wishes he had had, and that makes it kind of beautiful. [First added to this chart: 09/13/2017]

Jonwayne addresses his image right off the bat on this album. It seems that, despite the fact that he's proven himself to be a talented artist, people don't "see" him as a rapper, because he doesn't look the part, and in the "LIVE From Fuck You" track, that bears out in a sketch. Jonwayne uses lyrical prowess to handle large issues over what is mostly fairly small production. Jonwayne talks about a lot of his personal issues, like his self-doubt and his formerly crippling alcoholism, and he does it with passion and soul. Jonwayne may not look like a rapper, but he's quite a good one. [First added to this chart: 09/12/2017]

Hang is a quick album, just around 30 minutes, but Foxygen pack a lot into such a short album. They come to this album with a 40-piece band, which may sound excessive, egotistical, and somewhat self-indulgent, but that's because it is. The whole album is, honestly, but to Foxygen's credit, that's where they tend to shine. When people heard "...And Star Power", most said "Man, they should've cut this down to a single album and it would've been great", so what does Foxygen do with their next album? Cut it to basically half an album. But it works, it's brief, but it packs a punch. Foxygen are there with their 70s references in their music and crazy instrumental arrangements, and it makes for a fascinating album that I would argue is almost as good as "...And Star Power" was. Reassemblage is an interesting piece of work. Visible Cloaks make what almost sounds like computer versions of traditional Japanese instruments. The opening track almost sounds like something that would play as soon as your start up your computer. The album is full of manipulated loops and interesting sounds. The album does get a little repetitive after awhile, but it's an interesting album nonetheless. [First added to this chart: 09/07/2017]

Cloud Nothings are volatile and borderline unhinged sometimes, but that's what makes their music so powerful. It's big and heavy, and never holds back, neither musically or lyrically. Dylan Baldi is brutally honest, and his lyrics are often times bleak and realistic, and coupled with the music that often feels like an outpouring of emotion, you get a very effective album. In Between is pretty laid back for an album from The Feelies, but it works for them. This isn't nearly as raved up as their 80s and 90s stuff was, so don't expect Crazy Rhythms or Time For A Witness. That being said, there's a certain low-key intensity to this album despite it being laid back. It's not full of the nervous energy we're used to from The Feelies, but rather just fun.
