“ I am NOT a number. I am a free man”. Cackling, cynical laughter ensues. For the second straight year, we find Maiden at the pole position. The only true rival being none other than Judas Priest. And it was close. Both albums are upper echelons. In many ways, it was this yeqar that catapulted metal to the top. The first year, Maiden got truly serious attention with the help pip power on vocals and the anthemic Running For The Hills catapulted eddy into the national consciousness. Children of the Damned, Hallowed Be Thy Name were the emo songs of their day. Song& mesmerized by the misfits of the suburban USA like rallying cries. This was my first Maiden album. And One of my first albums, period. It got me into working

Walking The Talk
Judas Priest do NOT like losing. After taking a dip in popularity with their last release Point Of Entry (as I discussed recently in The Repo Zone) and with young upstarts like Accept and Maiden nipping at their heels, Priest hunkered down, regrouped and just positively exploded with cut after cut of high energy, ass kicking Metal. Every single track rules and every single track feels unique & different. Melodic & catchy as hell YET still undeniably HEAVY, this album ruled the suburban high school air waves back in 1982 and rightly so. This is Priest’s high water mark for the entire 80s.

Rank ‘Em #3: Accept
It’s one of those “Where were you?” moments that shook the metal community back in 1982. The opening track “Fast a Shark” on Restless & Wild. The opening fake out of German Alps folk music. The frenetic, jolting record scratch. And The Scream that announced a change of the guard. That something new was on the horizon. Speed Metal. Accept from Germany ( and Raven from the UK) were on the forefront of this new sound which would be tightened and bolted down to become thrash in the ensuing years.
How would you rank their albums? Which of their albums are essential?
Did they have the first Speed Metal album with Breaker in 1981?
Are any of their albums past Metal Heart worth checking out?!?!
PS. I was going to have another battle – this time between Raven & Accept entitled Speed Kings and how during the early 80s these two duked it out for speed metal supremacy, but I just don’t think Raven’s all that. And Accept are! [First added to this chart: 01/18/2020]

Very nice. I ranked The Dreaming and Big science a little higher, but at least you got them. I keep hearing so much about orange juice but I'm not sure I've ever heard them. Or I just don't remember. I definitely have to check that one out.
