Neil Young tends to fluctuate from heavy rock that drips with deeply distorted guitar tones to sweet country folk. On this album his folky side prevails with the best results of his career. The perfect album for driving through a cold country side at 11pm. A majority of the songs are sweet ballads that slow dance with the listener, and the rest are the aforementioned heavy rockers. However, unlike with You Don't Mess Around with Jim, this album transitions between fast rock songs and slow folk songs perfectly. [First added to this chart: 01/10/2018]

After the Gold Rush and Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere are two sides of the same Neil Young coin. While Gold Rush is a beautiful, serene, and occasionally heavy album, this album is heavy and occasionally serene. Neil Young wrote most of the albums while delirious, and the song structures on most tracks are deceptively simple. However, the guitar playing is phenomenal and the chemistry with crazy horse is impeccable. The softer tracks are also beautiful and heartbreaking.

There are 2 songs this album is rightfully known for: Down by the River and Cowgirl in the Sand. I'll let the guitar speak for itself.

I cannot believe this madman simply decided to stop being a writer and become a singer-songwriter instead. Without any knowledge of how to sing, play guitar, or write a melody! Then he goes and releases one of the best pieces of folk to graze anyone's ears. He literally calls the album "Songs of Leonard Cohen" just to rub your nose in the fact that he is the one who wrote "Susanne", one of the greatest songs of all time. The man was clearly a poet, by the time you finish deciphering the meaning behind the second song on the album the thing is finished, begging you to give it another spin. Rating metrics: Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some charts can have several thousand ratings)

This chart is rated in the top 2% of all charts on BestEverAlbums.com. This chart has a Bayesian average rating of 91.2/100, a mean average of 91.5/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 92.4/100. The standard deviation for this chart is 8.7.

Thanks for your comment Boltzmann! I can see why the wording of my description confused you, but I have obviously listened to every album front to back on every one of my charts. I meant that I hadn't listened to most of the albums in the top 500 or so in the overall chart, and thus don't be angry if I don't put Loveless or whatever on my chart.

I'm sorry you found my chart "bland". Feel free to hit me with any recommendations that aren't dull!

Really cool here. I found one new album from a band from Mexico but the rest is everything i can go with. Beatles, Radiohead, Neil Young and David Bowie superb collection.

"Here is a list of my favorite albums, I haven't listened to them all"... that's not how that works, I'd say drop one of these sentences. Impressive how your chart is still extremely predictable and bland.

Sunflower by The Beach Boys is great though, and indeed underappreciated. This mf was making shoegazing in the '70s.

Pretty good. Not a fan of Fleet Foxes myself, as they remind me of stroking stoats in the West Country. Good to see Forever Changes by Love ranked so high.
