’91:2 THE DEAD ARE THEIR OWN GENRE

Let’s face it. The Grateful Dead are their own genre. Their own cottage industry. There is nothing like them. I didn’t always know this. I used to lump them in with all these other jam bands my stoner friends and surfing buddies would listen to back in the early 90s when jam bands were having a renaissance. I mean the Spin doctors were popular solely because they were Jam Band lite. A poppified version of the jam bands that were all the rage back then. So funny that jam bands now make almost no appearance of anyone’s list from 1991 now. And please don’t even mention those goofballs Phish. They suck. lol. No. Grateful dead exist all alone. And because of all those a other jam bands my hipppie hippie friends would listen to in the early 90s bands like Big Head Todd, Blues Traveler, moe. and yes Phish. Lots & lots of Phish. I completely wrote off The Grateful Dead. I just assumed they sounded like all those other jam bands all my stoner friends liked.

But, I was wrong. The Dead stand alone.

And this is one of their best live albums. I’m no expert. I’m no Deadhead. I just know that this album rules. And has become one of my favorite live albums over the years. A staple for my camping trips over the last decade.

BUT, Glynspsa does know his Dead. His chart of the 100 best live albums from the Grateful Dead is a gift from the gods for us Dead neophytes. And I’m not surprised at all to find One From the Vaults in his top 6. It’s that good.

Glynspsa’s Dead chart: https://www.besteveralbums.com/thechart.php?c=37849

Grade A: ESSENTIAL. I used to laugh that so many of one band’s live albums could be essential. I thought it was weird and just a bit pathetic. I mean there was sooo much great music out there. How could one just obsess about one band. Surely all these live albums sounded pretty much identical, right? With slight variations that only the total obsessive would notice and the rest of us normals would just scratch our heads and wonder why people would listen to a hundred different versions of the essentially the same album. I’ve never been so happy to be wrong. Long live The Dead!

'91:13 Merchant Ivory Rock That Actually Like, You Know, Rocks!
(Repo AOTD#4)

I normally hate this genre. Adult alternative. Stuff like 10,000 Maniacs & The Sundays. They always seemed to lack a certain bite. A certain grounding . A risk of floating off into the ether on lightweight balls of cotton fluff. The aural equivalent of kissing your sister. And I knew it well. I pretty much knew I'd typically hit off with a girl if she likes this stuff on the condition that she didn't take her politics (and her self) too seriously.. No this was my niche. Girls who dug NPR & The New Yorker. Girls who were smarter than me. Plus, I love short hair on a girl. Throw a cute beret in there, & I'm pretty much done for. Yup. Slightly artsy, literary types who curl up with the Sunday Times and listen to NPR are my kryptonite in a sense.

Anyways, but this style of music I always found kind of boring or self-satisfied or, the worse - self righteous & weary.

So imagine my surprise when I absolutely fell in love with this little gem that's clearly been influenced by both Natalie Merchant & The Sundays. The vocalist positively channels these song and sings them with so much down home, earnest but tasteful passion & genuine love. While you can't help but be reminded of Natalie Merchant and The Sundays, I like it far better. Translation: I can actually make it through the entire album. Anyways, if you are a fan of Lilith Fair Adult Alternative feather rock, you should really check this out. For me to like it - stuff I normally hate & make fun of- means it must be AMAZING!

'91:12 The Lost Great Husker Du Album

What were music critics thinking? That's the only thing I can ask myself. Everyone in America is mourning the loss of Husker Du. Worshipping at the altar of Bob Mould's every fart in the wake of Husker Du's implosion. And Grant Hart quietly makes yet another Husker Du album. That no one even notices. That never even makes it to the bargain bin because it gets no press whatsoever. The world is a fickle place. Thank God there's music heads like Dihansse out there. Paying no heed to public consensus. Placing a (S)Aints album of all things at the top of his charts in 1991 when everyone know they haven't done didily since the 70s. Because this is a gem. The great lost Husker Du album that was actually released and toured behind but no one paid attention to. My friends back then knew. The Husker Du worshippers I hung out with. But, did I listen to them. No! Because I'm an idiot. Don't be an idiot. If you LOVE Husker Du, well you've just receive the greatest christmas gift in the whole world. I've been listening to this on my walkmen as I shovel my car out of this Midwestern blizzard we've gotten over the last couple of days, and it totally brings me back to the sound of the American Underground in the mid to late 80s. Trying to figure out how this is only on two people's charts. We're all lemmings. Don't be a lemming.

Highly Recommended. And essential for you Husker Du fans out there.

Rating metrics: Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some charts can have several thousand ratings)

This chart is rated in the top 1% of all charts on BestEverAlbums.com. This chart has a Bayesian average rating of 94.4/100, a mean average of 97.1/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 98.0/100. The standard deviation for this chart is 6.1.

How could I give this any less than 100? As with all your Mellow Zone lists, this chart is a comprehensive snapchat for that year in music without losing any sense of your own personable charm.

You may have come across it anyway, but I'd thought I'd recommend the Les Razilles Dénudés bootleg, '77 Live, released in 1991 as something worth checking out. It's an album with a bit of a cult following and also a personal favourite of mine, catchy garage rock bass riffs overladen with screeching feedback. Let me know your thoughts on it!!

A truly Awesome 1991 chart; encompassing a nice diversity of genres!
Looking forward to explore a bunch of those unfamiliar titles... *especially* because of the excellent descriptive commentaries!!! I agree with baystateoftheart, would be interesting to see where your Hall of Fame items drop in. But either way, great job on this one!! A++
