'The Long Sleep' starts out with the single 'Spells' and instead of this simply being the first track on the EP, we see this track evolve and reform for the remainder of the run time. This is great for the EP and the listener because 'Spells' is an astounding track. The jazz influence adds to the dreamlike feel of the vocals and the lyrics are brilliant. It is Hval's best track to date. 'The Dreamer is Everyone in her Dream' re-frames 'Spells' in a more minimalist and tragic way, and then the title track dives into ambience, whilst retaining elements of the previous songs. Hval yet again demonstrates her talent for spoken word in the closing track 'I Want to Tell You Something', which comments on the process of streaming by delivering a very personal moment. On 'Daytona' Pusha T continues to be the best at what he does by an enormous margin. The production on this album is the first he's had as a solo artist that can take on The Neptunes' production of the Clipse records. This is complimented by the lyricism that is maybe sharper than ever, especially on closer 'Infrared', the ultimate warning shot before the now infamous 'The Story of Adidon'. The length of the project does hurt it a bit, I would have loved to have had maybe another ten minutes of this quality, but it's the only release from Wyoming that doesn't waste a moment in its 20ish minutes. Dropping on mother's day, Andre 3000's 'Look Ma No Hands' may be the most emotional and ambitious release in his discography. The almost 20 minute title track is a free-form jazz piece that is utterly engrossing. 'Me & My (To Bury Your Parents)' is a sung track that hits the same emotional notes as the title track, with the overall theme being obvious from the title and release date. 'Iridescence' is a clear departure from the 'Saturation' trilogy, and one that felt necessary for the group. It is far less catchy than any of those albums but is much more cohesive. The production is the standout element here, and often the rappers are unable to keep up with them. There are some poor tracks early on in the album, 'Thug Life' and 'Something About Him' go way too far with the poppy sound and they're fairly unbearable. However, about halfway through the album things pick up significantly. 'Tape' expertly sampled Radiohead to create an evolving beat which suits each rapper as it changes. 'J'ouvert' is not only a great song, but it sounds unlike anything they've done before, and 'Tonya' is a perfectly realised track that's been very necessary after the departure of Ameer Vann form the group.
