La tendenza a cazzeggiare che era tipica dei Camper Van Beethoven qui è solo latente, giusto per non prendersi mai molto sul serio. Un rock a tratti energico con puntate frequenti nella psichedelia più creativa e meno autoreferenziale che serve soprattutto da struttura ad una musica folkloristica proveniente da ogni parte del mondo. Disco che sa di prati irlandesi, di sole, di mare, di aria fresca; canzoni eccellenti e ben fatte, scrittura ispirata, obiettivi ben chiari in testa e perfettamente raggiunti. Il momento magico in cui tutto ti riesce bene e quindi puoi permetterti di fare una cover della "Sweet thing" di Van Morrison migliore dell'originale ed in mezzo inserirci un estratto da "Blackbird" dei Beatles e tutto funziona alla perfezione. Dal riff ( ma anche la parte centrale ) di "Whole lotta love" all'incedere di "What is and what should never be", dal trattamento riservato al blues in "The lemon song" ( ennesimo furto… ) a, soprattutto, l'assolo di "Heartbreaker", dai cambi di "Ramble on" alla performance alla batteria di John Bonham in "Moby Dick"; l'interno di copertina poi ne era la conferma. Poesia pura; un album dove se non si riesce ad entrare appieno nella sostanza, la forma può risultare ostica. Omaggio funebre a due amici scomparsi per cancro, triste per forza di cose ma non piagnucoloso, non arrendevole o sconfitto, portatore di un dolore non esibito ma raccontato con sobrietà e sentito sotto tutti i punti di vista: dalla parte di chi sa che dovrà andarsene e da quella di chi rimarrà. Dolore e rabbia, speranza e rassegnazione, pianti intimi ed anche risate amare. E, alla fine, la "magia" pur devastante che simili esperienze lasciano in chi rimane. Difficile pensare ad un disco più cruciale di questo. Dal punto di vista musicale, innanzitutto, perché fotografa i Beatles esattamente a metà strada tra la spontaneità degli esordi e la grandeur artistica degli anni successivi; dal punto di vista storico, perché pochi altri dischi hanno saputo fungere da colonna sonora così azzeccata di un'epoca,la metà degli anni sessanta, a sua volta irripetibile; dal punto di vista commerciale, perché la storia la fai anche con i numeri e "Rubber soul" contiene alcune delle canzoni più famose ( oltre che più belle ) dei Beatles. Overall I get it. I’d like to see a bit more diversity, but I share your taste for many of these albums and artists. Some I am yet to explore. So thanks for some ideas.
