Top 100 Music Albums of 2018 by travelful
2018 snapshot
Every album I listen to will be included on here, even if I hated it. You may also notice some higher rated albums in the comments, while some albums I hated are still featured in the chart. This is because I create my yearly charts as "snapshots" of the music scene from that year. From these I create my decade charts, where you will find no filler. Basically anything rated 60% or higher I recommend depending on your tastes.
Enjoy! 2018 has been an amazing year for music.

I want to like this band, but can't get into them as much as I'd like. I don't particularly enjoy a lot of the instrumentals here, and scremo vocals have never been my thing.
light 5 [First added to this chart: 07/28/2018]
I went into this with pretty high expectations, considering all the positive reviews. To say I was disappointed would be an understatement. This album comes across to me as another manufactured generic pop album. Sure it might be slightly better than some contemporaries (not that impressive), but no more creative than a typical Lady Gaga record. The lyrics although have okay subject matter occasionally, are delivered in a such unsatisfying and commercial way its painful. Honestly certain tracks like 'Take a Byte' and 'Screwed' just come across as corny as hell to me. Production wise, it has some highlights here and there but for the most part we're looking at the typical "top 40" uninteresting radio-esque production and her copying the sounds of Prince, neither of which appeal much to me. The opener has such promise too, I was strapped in for a beautiful art pop / R&B record, but instead got a generic, half-assed, uninspired commercialized pop album that doesn't stand out much at all from her contemporaries. I know for a fact she can do MUCH better than this.

I loved 90059, it has remained one of my favorite hip-hop records in recent years. I was really looking forward to where Jay Rock would go next, hopefully to the next level. Unfortunately it seems TDE has pushed Rock into the pop rap lane, and it's an awkward fit. I expect gritty, nasty, street rap from Jay Rock. He has always seemed the most aggressive and "gangsta" of the TDE crew. What we got here is a couple bangers mixed awkwardly with pop rap tracks of Rock singing. It's just so many steps backwards from 90059. I hope Jay Rock can eventually release his 'Good Kid MAAD City'.
light - decent 4 [First added to this chart: 06/22/2018]
This album comes off as pretty pathetic in a lot of areas. Basically it's Eminem blaming everyone but himself that his last album was trash. The first few tracks were pretty dope so I thought Eminem was gonna surprise me with a pretty decent album. However once the first skit hits the album quality goes to shit. The lyrics are typical toilet bowl humor Eminem is famous for, with some tasteless and completely assinine lyrics. He praises rappers like Logic, J Cole and even Hopsin while disses Tyler The Creator for saying he thought his last album was garbage and even calls Tyler a faggot lol...how out of touch and tasteless can you be. Anyways, he also tries to mimic numerous popular songs including Bad and Boujee and Humble, which I thought was pretty corny. The production ranges from decent to absolute garbage.
light 4 [First added to this chart: 09/03/2018]
Another snoozefest from J. Cole...and of course he has no features so he tries to do everything again by himself. The results are corny hooks with his subpar attempt at singing. Basically just more watered down "conscious" rap over some decent but unmemorable jazzy & trap beats. His flow and voice is so monotone and boring on most tracks. If you wanna listen to a hip-hop record talk about drug usage in a creative and meaningful way try Danny Brown's Atrocity Exhibition. If you want you some conscious rap with a pop appeal, there's much better guys out there... I would start with Kendrick Lamar or Joey Bada$$. Honestly you could probably just pick any random conscious hip-hop album from any given year and it would likely be on par or better than this, so I'm not sure the hype surrounding Cole. I saw a guy on RYM call this "D.A.R.E - The Album", its actually sadly accurate. Still, its not godawful or anything, its just very generic and boring.
light 4 [First added to this chart: 04/21/2018]
Another lazy release by The Weeknd, its just rinse and repeat for him at this point. Boring and monotone vocals over some decent hazy and nocturnal production. It's essentially just background music, no reason to ever listen to it.
light 4 [First added to this chart: 03/30/2018]
I wasn't going to listen to this, but decided to give it a shot when Pitchfork gave it BNM and Fantano gave it a 7. Both praised it for its lo-fi production which interested me. I am a fan of trap rap, and especially cloud rap. I will admit that the production on this thing is actually really good, and on nearly every track. It's lo-fi, airy, urban, and atmospheric. My problem with it is Carti's performance, which is undeniably bad. He sounds like all those other shitty soundcloud rappers that refuse to find their own personality. He's whiny, repetitive, boring, inessential, and frankly ruins the interesting minimalistic beats. It is surprising he is apart of a A$ap Mob considering he sounds nothing like their style which is actually fairly unique, or at least used to be. Oh, and it's super inflated of course with a bunch of garbage tracks that should have been scrapped if he cared about the quality of his debut album. But instead he just follows suit with all the rest of his new-age trap contemporaries and slaps all the filler B-side tracks in here too so he can milk as much money from streams as he can.
strong 3 [First added to this chart: 05/16/2018]
A little confused why this was delayed for so long since its original release. It's pretty bad. For starters, I don't listen to lyrics when it comes to this kind of music, its feel good music for college parties / get togethers. I understand that. However, with that said there are wayyyy more artistic ways to go about this type of music. Just look at Travi$ Scott's "Rodeo" as an example. This thing just lacks creativity. Most of the songs suck outside of the ones he released already as singles, and its super inflated for no apparent reason outside of trying to get more money through streams. I love plenty of trap and pop rappers, but I prefer Post more as an internet personality than I do a musician. I would have given it a 4/10 because I do like some songs, but since he made fans wait a year longer than the original release date and yet still inflated this thing with a bunch of boring filler tracks...
light 3 [First added to this chart: 04/27/2018]
nobody even needs to diss drake at this point, he disses himself every time he releases another insanely bloated, half-assed album. you can tell when people make music for the art, and when music is made for profit & with no regard to quality control on your own albums. drake is so lazy with his own discogrophy at this point that he doesn't even make an attempt at creating cohesive front-to-back albums. just slaps a bunch of b-side quality tracks in a random assortment and releases it as an album. Overall, Side 1 was a step up from More Life and Views, however considering how awful those projects we're that's not much of a compliment. Side B is probably the worst thing I've heard in a long time.
Side 1: 4.5/10 -- best track: God's plan
Side 2: 1/10 -- best track: nice for what

Cheers for the rating pal. Just picked up your no.1 LP for cheap from Urban Outfitters to try it out to celebrate!
The fact that we only have 5 albums in common only proves that this was a great year in music: there was plenty of choice in good quality music for every taste
Great chart!
