Top 100 Music Albums of 2018 by babyBlueSedan

Guess it's about time I make one of these. I've been pretty ambivalent about listening to music lately so I haven't listened to much from 2018, but I'll throw what I have heard here. If you want to know how this chart works check my other recent year charts because I'm too lazy to paste it here. Basically check out anything I rated 65 or above.

Now 45% less apathetic, with (mostly nonsensical) genres!

**Update 2/19/20: The first post-2018 update has arrived. Only messed with the stuff at 70 or higher

Pop pop

Really fun pop album that is really really front-loaded. The first three or four sounds are all tremendous but outside of Yours nothing else really stands out. Every time I listen to this I think "this is my favorite pop album of the year" during the first song and then I find myself waiting for it to be over.

Self-conscious hip hop

Tack an extra five points on if you like EPs. I've never really been a fan* because longer albums tend to grow on me more, and the margin for error is also smaller when your album is shorter. Eagle is on point here with his lyrics, which as usual are a mix of funny and poignant lines. I could quote lines I love here for days. But there are a couple songs I just really don't care for, and the atmospheric production doesn't really add anything. I view this as a kind of victory lap after Brick Body Kids, and while I enjoyed listening to it it's not something I'll go back to.

*I realize that I'm a hypocrite because I have DAYTONA and Boygenius up at a 75.

Glossy black metal

Last year I wrote some arrogant blurb about I must be a trve black metal fan because I found an album by a random Massachusetts black metal band to be too melodic. Well I'm here to announce that all that cred should be taken away because this album is even more melodic but totally kickass. I guess it really only border on being black metal, but it never lets up in intensity and has some great riffs.

The only problem is that it goes on for 70 minutes and doesn't have any sort of variety. Which means I get bored by the end every time. Nice for at least one listen though. Also, how can you write a song called Fire Walk With Me and have all the lyrics be some emo shit about burning your life away and not have any lyrics about garmonbozia?

Trap rap - with attitude

Cardi B has a huge personality and it really comes out on this album. I liked this a lot when I first listened to it but a second listen revealed that a lot of the songs aren't very strong. The opener is great though as are the songs with Chance and SZA. I think a lot of people didn't like Bartier Cardi but I like that one too.

This got bad reviews, and outside of Never Say Die the singles were ehh. However, it's not nearly as bad as a lot of people think. Never Say Die, Get Out, Deliverance, and Graves are all great songs, even if they're kind of easy to forget after you hear them. Miracle is the only atrocious song here, and believe me it is bad. It doesn't feel as necessary or exciting as their other albums, but don't let the bad reviews stop you from trying it. It's basically like their first two albums, just a bit more streamlined.

Smooth electro-pop

I'm pretty sure that I liked every odd song on this album and was ambivalent about every even song. Overall I guess that means I liked it (5 is bigger than 4), but even the songs I like don't keep me coming back. The opener and track 3 are probably my favorites, but the fact that I can't even come up with their names (I think the opener is Missing U?) should tell you something. Human Being does nothing for me, and a lot of these so-called "dance" tracks are pretty subdued and not very inviting.

Psychedelic house

If you played me a house song and a techno song back to back and asked me which was which, I think there's about a 40% chance I could get it right. But I can still say I like this, and the variety and guest appearances keep it interesting for over an hour. But not interesting enough that I remember anything about it afterwards, which is why it's down chilling with the 65s.

How much of a nerd am I if I lost my shit when Kurt Wagner showed up? Probably a big one.

Funk pop

I was so pumped for this but after a couple listens I'm pretty bummed. I can't really describe what it is that failed to draw me in here, but this just feels a lot less fun than Malibu. I want to call it sterile, but it's not. It's very funky, the production is great, and it switches between a lot of different styles. I think the comparison I'll make is Steely Dan - you can tell it's well-produced, but it's so smooth and crisp that all of the edge has been sanded off.

On my first listen I took issue with the song 6 Summers due to the fact that I don't really care for songs about the Trump era. It's been a terrible era, but music about it isn't going to help. And in 6 years those songs will hopefully feel like a relic of the past as we've moved on to better times. But on second listen I actually liked it a lot, and it's the only song from this album I've found myself randomly humming. But after two listens, there are only a couple other songs I remember.

Another knock is the guests are a bit heavy. Pusha T and Q-Tip have great verses, but they feel tacked on. Paak himself is also rapping more, and he's not a bad rapper, but Malibu was such a trip because he jumped between rapping and singing so effortlessly. This is still a great album, and while I wouldn't call it a bid for radio play I think it will help Paak get more widely known. I just wish I liked it more.

Lo fi midwest emo

The vocals here are lazy to the point where it was distracting, and the production is a little grating after a while - all of the guitar sounds are basically the same. But there's a lot of passion here and I feel like these songs might be better than I thought at first, so I plan to give this another try.

Smooth, subtly funky R&B

Freetown Sound took a while to grow on me, so I hoped this one will too. But after a couple listens it feels a bit flat and samey. There's no "Best To You" or "Augustine" here, and while I'm never bored I'm also never wowed. Extremely good mood music, extremely mediocre paying close attention music.
