Top 100 Music Albums of 2018 by babyBlueSedan
Guess it's about time I make one of these. I've been pretty ambivalent about listening to music lately so I haven't listened to much from 2018, but I'll throw what I have heard here. If you want to know how this chart works check my other recent year charts because I'm too lazy to paste it here. Basically check out anything I rated 65 or above.
Now 45% less apathetic, with (mostly nonsensical) genres!
**Update 2/19/20: The first post-2018 update has arrived. Only messed with the stuff at 70 or higher

Sophisticated art pop
Pretty decent art pop but nothing I would go back to. Recommend a listen. [First added to this chart: 06/06/2018]
Trap rap
I've had a huge change of heart about this album over my last few listens. I wouldn't say I was blown away on my first listen, but I definitely enjoyed it a lot. The production on this thing is fantastic, and hearing Shoota for the first time was one of those experiences where you know you're hearing one of your new favorite songs. Other highlights on the first listen were the opener and Fell in Luv, and I really liked Nicki's verse as well.
But with each subsequent listen, I've enjoyed it a little less, until the most recent listen when I didn't even make it through. As good as the production is, it can't carry the rapping. I never thought Playboi Carti had any personality or rapping ability, but on my first couple listens I didn't care because I thought the songs didn't need rapping to work. And they don't - the production + mediocre rapping would still make for some enjoyable songs. But every time I listened again, the rapping sounded worse, to the point where it started to be a negative. I thought Nicki's verse had some clever lines, but now I don't know what I was thinking. The only verse on this thing that I like is Lil Uzi Vert's on Shoota, which I still legitimately enjoy. But the rest is...not good.
If this was a beat tape with a few verses it would be fine. Even with a bit more competent rapping it would be fine, because I like the idea of rap as punk where the cadence and sound matters more than the words. But I think in order for that to work you need someone at least a little more talented than Carti. [First added to this chart: 08/30/2018]
Slug metal
Slugdge makes the case for metal bands having crazy concepts. I'm not a huge fan of death metal, so even when I saw this called technical death metal, which is the kind of death metal I typically like, I wasn't likely to give it a listen. But these guys are called Slugdge, and all of their songs are about cosmic slugs. So I figured I should give it a listen.
And it's good stuff. I like the riffs a lot, and while the vocals aren't my favorite I don't dislike them. The slug concept really doesn't even hit you that hard since the vocals aren't that clean and are hard to make out. In the end though nothing stands out to me after the first three tracks. [First added to this chart: 06/23/2018]
Strummy indie rock
Not really a fan of this type of lo-fi indie pop but some of the lyrics are alright. Felt a bit long, which is telling because it's like 30 minutes or something. [First added to this chart: 04/05/2018]
Pop gangsta rap
Jay Rock doesn't have much of a personality on the mic as far as I can tell. I thought this about his last album and while I like this one more the features still shine brighter than him. Also yeah it's poppy but not necessarily in a bad way. The bigger issue is that the hooks sound really silly. [First added to this chart: 08/30/2018]
Hardcore trap
Man, there are some great moments on this, like when he calls out the soundcloud scene he helped burst and when he makes that Chowder reference on Sumo. But the rest is mostly boring, which is something you'd never think would fit Denzel Curry after hearing the first half of Imperial. He seems really focused on atmosphere here, which is a little dark sure, but not as dark as he wants it to be. I'd prefer just hearing him rap a million miles per second again. [First added to this chart: 08/18/2018]
Punky noise rock
For being a noisy rock album, this doesn't feel very exciting. I can picture myself sitting on a wooden chair with my hands on my knees and not being moved by anything here. It sounds like it would translate better to a live setting, and the lyrics are pretty much nonsense. But still, it's a fun ride. [First added to this chart: 06/07/2018]
Chance the Rapper rap
I need to listen to this again, but for now my opinion is that it's pretty lackluster. There are some great moments - "Prom/King" has rightfully gotten a lot of attention - but the rest really blends together. And it's that kind of conscious hip hop where the lyrics aren't really that groundbreaking and not all that deep.
Also Chance's verse on here is one of the worst verses I've ever heard. [First added to this chart: 06/06/2018]
Psychedelic synth pop
This album has some nice ideas but in the end isn't super interesting. There are a couple long songs near the end that really outstay their welcome. [First added to this chart: 08/18/2018]
Stoner doooooom
Pretty good stuff, but I find myself not having any interest in relistening. I like the concept of Sleep but so much of their stuff sounds the same. [First added to this chart: 06/06/2018]
