Guess it's about time I make one of these. I've been pretty ambivalent about listening to music lately so I haven't listened to much from 2018, but I'll throw what I have heard here. If you want to know how this chart works check my other recent year charts because I'm too lazy to paste it here. Basically check out anything I rated 65 or above.

Now 45% less apathetic, with (mostly nonsensical) genres!

Artsy fartsy fake indie shit

I really liked Bon Iver's 22 A Million, but boy has it been terrible for music. A lot of artists are trying to do that vocoder stuff on otherwise uninteresting albums, as if the vocals were what made 22 A Million interesting. I also can't stand Justin Vernon's voice, so it was really the songwriting of that album that impressed me. But Vernon seems to have taken the success of that album to mean "people want to hear me dick around while yodeling in autotune," which, hey, is maybe true for some people but it's not true for me.

There are no instrumental parts of this album that I remember because it's all so formless, like one giant jam. It sounds like Vernon and friends hanging out in a garage for a jam session and then putting the results out as an album. Which I mean he already passed that off as a music festival this year, so why not also pass it off as an album?

Vernon is also a terrible lyricist. There's this one song where it starts with "well I hope I don't FUCK THIS UP" and he proceeds to fuck up very much by continuing the song. It's like he thinks using the F-word is going to make his song more edgy or meaningful but it really just makes it sound amateurish. But there's no lyrics worse than on the last song, which is just him singing "well you are who you are" over and over. I think it's supposed to be empowering, but it's the kind of empowerment you'd see on a poster in your principal's office so I don't know why I'd want to hear it in song form.
