Top 100 Music Albums of 2018 by babyBlueSedan
Guess it's about time I make one of these. I've been pretty ambivalent about listening to music lately so I haven't listened to much from 2018, but I'll throw what I have heard here. If you want to know how this chart works check my other recent year charts because I'm too lazy to paste it here. Basically check out anything I rated 65 or above.
Now 45% less apathetic, with (mostly nonsensical) genres!
**Update 2/19/20: The first post-2018 update has arrived. Only messed with the stuff at 70 or higher

Afro party jazz
Hey, I like jazz now
Glitch dance
Listening to this makes me what to go back and give No Now a second chance because this is such great, unpredictable dance music. [First added to this chart: 10/29/2018]
Post hardcore punk
The fact that I listened to Never Fight a Man With a Perm a million times in 2019 and not 2018 proves I'm always a year behind on things.
Earnest overblown pop
Every year I have at least one album that doesn't make my final list but I end up coming back around to. This year it happened quickly, mostly because I was still undecided on this one. What we have here are two of my absolute favorite songs of the year - Love it If We Made It and Give Yourself a Try - and a bunch of other songs I kind of like or don't care for at all. I really wish this album had leaned into the over-the-top nature of those songs, because they're absolutely the highlights. But I've grown to like most of the other songs too; on Be My Mistake the band is basically trying to be John Mayer, but it's a pretty enjoyable song. There are a few other bops - namely It's Not Living If It's Not With You and the TOOTIME song I can't spell right off the top of my head. Otherwise there are hints of jazz, acoustic rock, and other stuff.
Honestly NME calling this the next OK Computer was the worst thing they could have done for the band because now everyone is having much stronger reactions than they would have had otherwise. Even when this album verges on insufferable it really does what it set out to do. And I think it's more tongue-in-cheek than people think. The Man Who Married a Robot got a lot of attention as a "rip-off" of Fitter, Happier, but I don't think you're supposed to take that one serious. Judging by the other songs that approach social interactions with not-always-serious approach ("getting STDs at 27 isn't really the vibe") it feels like a song meant to poke fun than anything. And I think it accomplishes its goal - the part about pictures of the guy's penis always catches me off guard, not in a "that's so deep" way but in a "yeah, that's a thing" way. I don't know. I get why people would be turned off by this but it's also annoying reading really reactionary criticism of it. [First added to this chart: 01/26/2019]
Synthpvp
This got bad reviews, and outside of Never Say Die the singles were ehh. However, it's not nearly as bad as a lot of people think. Never Say Die, Get Out, Deliverance, and Graves are all great songs, even if they're kind of easy to forget after you hear them. Miracle is the only atrocious song here, and believe me it is bad. It doesn't feel as necessary or exciting as their other albums, but don't let the bad reviews stop you from trying it. It's basically like their first two albums, just a bit more streamlined. [First added to this chart: 06/07/2018]
Smooth, subtly funky R&B
Freetown Sound took a while to grow on me, so I hoped this one will too. But after a couple listens it feels a bit flat and samey. There's no "Best To You" or "Augustine" here, and while I'm never bored I'm also never wowed. Extremely good mood music, extremely mediocre paying close attention music. [First added to this chart: 09/22/2018]
Slug metal
Slugdge makes the case for metal bands having crazy concepts. I'm not a huge fan of death metal, so even when I saw this called technical death metal, which is the kind of death metal I typically like, I wasn't likely to give it a listen. But these guys are called Slugdge, and all of their songs are about cosmic slugs. So I figured I should give it a listen.
And it's good stuff. I like the riffs a lot, and while the vocals aren't my favorite I don't dislike them. The slug concept really doesn't even hit you that hard since the vocals aren't that clean and are hard to make out. In the end though nothing stands out to me after the first three tracks. [First added to this chart: 06/23/2018]
Psychedelic synth pop
This album has some nice ideas but in the end isn't super interesting. There are a couple long songs near the end that really outstay their welcome. [First added to this chart: 08/18/2018]
DMT-techno
I wanted to like this, but I ended up liking it less than Immunity. The 10 minute song is really enjoyable, but a lot of the ambient tracks don't add anything. [First added to this chart: 06/07/2018]
Dance-able synth pop
I was grooving to this on my first listen, but while a lot of these tracks are fun they're really boring and don't have any hidden tricks up their sleeves. The lyrics are good but they don't make up for the uninspired backing tracks. [First added to this chart: 08/30/2018]
