Top 100 Music Albums of the 2000s by PeterSmith

After dropping out of music in the 90's I found the tunes in 2000's on the radio quite refreshing without really picking up new bands and renewing my interest in albums.
Coldplay, Keane, The Feeling, Travis, Kasabian and Amy MacDonald amongst exceptions. And by mid decade I finally got into Radiohead. Yahoo. Late but got there.
I heard singles from MGMT, Snow Patrol, The Strokes, White Stripes, Frans Ferdinand, Placebo, Jay Z, 50 Cents, Eminem, Daft Punk, Gorillaz, Air, Killers, The Script, Lily Allan, Moby, Libertines, Florence & The Machine, Artic Monkeys amongst many others all peaking my interest without any follow up.

But it did mean that I missed some great stuff that I am only catching up from mid 2010's onwards including Muse, Bon Iver, Kayne West, Grandaddy, Arcade Fire, The XX, Green Day, Sigur Ros, Interpol, Fleet Foxes, Modest Mouse, The National amongst others.

Probably I now think the 00's might now have the best music after the 70's previously being my go-to era. But I am light on 60's and 2010's era's so more to explore in those decades.

As at July 22 (June 2019) this chart has:
18 (10) big classics - appear in >1000 charts
23 (25) mid level classics - appear in >500 - 1000 charts
18 (14) low level classics - appear in >250 - 500 charts
21 (23) minor - appear in >100 - 250 charts
18 (24) rare - appear >10 - 100 charts
2 (4) super rare - appear in <10 charts
Just thought I'd share that! - My Chart picks are moving towards more recognised albums or just more people on the site?

I kinda came late to Coldplay even though I liked their singles. There is a lot of Coldplay bashing - similar to U2 - which I think is because of three things:
1. They are huge and popular
2. Their front man comes across a bit aloof and smug
3. You can always tell it is them - they have a bit of a formula

I don't mind any of those reasons as I'm only listening to their songs and I like their formula.

I had the equally excellent Parachutes in 2015 and got this in 2016 and it is a near perfect opening half of the album with Politik (4/5) followed by In My Place; God Put A Smile Upon Your Face; The Scientist and then Clocks (all 5/5). Only track that doesn't quite land with me is "A Whisper" and even then I heard it recently and thought it was better than I remembered.

Pop
I got this album about 2010 and should declare that like Amy I am also from Scotland - but I don't think that influenced my decision here. It was not my normal album and can't quite recall how I got it - I suspect it may have been my Mrs.
But this is full of intelligent pop tunes - darker than the standard pop "I love the boy/girl" with good social and political observations - the excellent Youth of Today is a prime example - "My children weren't the same, My children's children they're the ones to blame. And you say,
In my day we were better behaved" - observing the usual generational view of things were rosy in the past.
And the Footballer's Wives dig at Reality Celebrity - "And the girl from that show, yes the one we all know, she thinks she's some kinda star, yes you know who you are."

I enjoyed their singles at the time and got this about 2005.
She Has No Time and Bedshaped are two glorious songs.
The entire album is keyboard led without a guitar in sight with strong ballads throughout.

Rock - Progressive Pop
I got this 2009 off the back of the singles. I liked the vocal of Dan Gillespie-Sells which reminded me a bit of Suede's Brett Anderson.
This band - and this album - is energetic and fun with excellent lively tracks throughout - Join With Us, Turn It Up, Loneliness to name a few.

You can hear influences from 10cc and Supertramp with excellent backing vocal arrangements throughout.

Indie Rock
It took me until 2016 to get this album as part of my drive to get back into music and looking at top 100 charts through this website.
I enjoyed their singles in the background but during the 2000s I was only half listening to the radio and couldn't really distinguish between the bands really so never got round to following up with albums.
This album has two of my top 100 songs in Run and Chocolate - fantastic.
There are many great tracks on this album - 14 songs although only 53 minutes long thanks to 5 short under 3 minute tracks (almost like a 50/60's album in terms of the timings there)

Alternative / Punk
I got this almost at release time but can't recall what hooked me onto them.
It must have been the singles at the time with the excellent Where Did All The Love Go? along with Fire Vlad The Impaler and the thumping Underdog.

I love nearly every song on here but maybe struggle a bit with the instrumental Swarfiga, but what an excellent and lively album.

Alternative
Another album I picked up in 2016 through looking at charts on this site. Hadn't really hooked into their singles or knew who they were but loved the energy and tempo from first listen with this. Quickly followed up with Origin Of Symmetry which established with me as a top band and quickly got their back catalogue. But this was my first Muse album and remains my favourite - Starlight and Knights of Cydonia re two excellent songs, the first making me wish I could sing when I do belt it out (in private lol)

Only got this in 2018 after hearing their song - Intro - sampled on a hip-hop track. Loved it then recalled it had featured on things like BBC elections and other similar events. It is a top tune - and sets the tone for the album which is minimal with echo guitar and low key duel vocals

Indie Rock
Got this in 2015 after admitting to myself that Coldplay are really good - had a few of their albums and was consistently liking their singles - and thought I should start to get their back catalogue.
I loved the single Fix You and there are other equally great tracks here with the first half of the album really superb although I do feel it starts to dip slightly on the second half from Low onwards - although it only dips from great to good!

Alternative Rock, Art Rock
Got this almost at release off the back of the excellent One Day Like This - loving the big, big chorus chant. Guy Garvey has a rich, cool delivery.
