Mouth MoodsUnited States Neil Cicierega
For the third and cleanest sounding album as part of the ‘Mouth’ Series, Cicierega combines the best elements of his previous two albums, both of which I already love, and expands on them further. Mouth Moods sees the ‘more-than-a-mashup’ artist strike solid gold in the balance between kick-ass remixes that could stand alone as their own songs against the original (My favourite thing about Mouth Sounds) and surprisingly well done and humours unpredictable mashups (My favourite thing about Mouth Silence). Neil also returns to forum after the All Star-less Mouth Silence by including the most monumental sounding All-Star mashup yet, in ‘Mouth Pressure’.
Unlike his first two albums, Neil provides something more than just funny, danceable and surprising music and adds a quality that allows this album to top the rest: Emotion. Part of the emotion I feel listening to this album is down to nostalgia, through Cicierega’s callbacks to the previous albums which I had fallen in love with a year prior to Mouth Moods release. But the song T.I.M.E. is genuinely emotive, moving and inspiring, and it’s a song based on a campy 70’s disco hit. That’s Cicierga’s talent.
Mouth Sounds proved Neil could make All-Star work with almost any song, whilst sprinkling some mashed-up remixes that work well as standalone music and are downright better than the original (or at least close). Mouth Silence proved Neil could do it all without All-Star and provided surprising and extremely entertaining mashups that work well as comedy, perfecting contrast to subvert our expectations. But on Mouth Moods, Cicierega does all of this in one whilst going even further by calling back to the previous albums and turning dumb silly songs, into emotional masterpieces.
Whilst I would love for the ‘Mouth’ trilogy to be more than a trilogy, I wouldn’t mind if this was Neil’s last. This album provides a fantastic send off to everything introduced in the first two
