Top 100 Music Albums of 2019 by babyBlueSedan
Some people measure the passage of time with each birthday, I do it with each year chart intro I write. As always, here are the dumb rules I follow:
1. Everything I listen to will be here because I am a completionist
2. The comments will vary wildly in quality and effort
3. Everything rated 70 or higher will someday work its way into my collection. Anything rated 65 or maaaaybe 60 is still recommended but I probably thought it had "consistency problems" or "no real standouts"
4. I've gotten a bit more critical with my rating scale because I noticed I rate 80% of albums a 65, so there may be a few more lower-rated albums this year

Trap trap trap trap
This is an album that's full of energy and personality but which still felt a bit too samey. Needs another listen. "This pussy so wet might have to eat it with a spoon / Always in bikini bottoms cause I got that goo lagoon" is one of my favorite lyrics of the year. As is "I knock the shit out that bitch like an enema." [First added to this chart: 07/20/2019]
Sunshine R&B
I can't really describe why but this feels like a return to form after Oxnard, though it's still not up to the level of Malibu. It feels a lot more effortless, and the guests stars compliment Paak rather than overshadowing him. [First added to this chart: 05/02/2019]
Alternative R&B from the past
I had honestly never heard of Paul until this came out; I started following new music in 2014 so I guess I missed this leaking a year earlier in 2013. Listening to it now for the first time, it definitely feels of it's time - influenced by acts like the weekend, very similar to what Autre Ne Vuet was doing at the time, and a precursor to some of the spacier R&B that has evolved since. This is still really great though. There are tons of details, and I absolutely love the percussion. The vocals aren't really a highlight but the music, which is very layered and sounds pulled from a variety of influences, makes up for them. [First added to this chart: 07/20/2019]
Atmospheric math metal
I usually don't like metal with this many twists and turns, but the fact that it's all rooted in black metal makes it feel like it has a bit more structure. Needs more listens before I have a stronger opinion. [First added to this chart: 10/15/2019]
Ambient new age
Heartbreaking. Beautiful. And unfortunately, too unchanging in sound to sit through for an hour+. A few great lines and songs, especially "Hollywood," but too heavy and long to come back to regularly. [First added to this chart: 10/15/2019]
Slacker mid life crisis
I don't think I really appreciated how dour this album was until I listened to it after David Berman's death. I mean, I didn't think it was a party record before, but there were a lot of lines I missed. Like "and I confess I'm barely hanging on." And "the dead know what they're doing when they leave this world behind." This is a record that's obsessed with death, but it hides it under a bunch of musings on the mundanity of life. Berman has some really touching lines, and he has a knack for writing catchy hooks when he wants to.
Which is why I liked this more than I do. I was never a fan of Silver Jews despite Berman's terrific lyrics, and it was mostly due to the music never really grabbing me. It also made me realize I liked Pavement more for their noisy moments than their slacker tendencies, as it often felt too laid back for me. These songs have interesting country or rock flourishes in places, but in general it doesn't stray too much for a single sound. It also doesn't help that there are a few songs here - "Snow is Falling in Manhatten" and "She's Making Friends, I'm Turning Stranger" especially - that feel too long and don't have much happening. It adds up to an album that feel longer than it is, and the fact that it's a huge bummer to listen to makes it difficult to get motivated to hear it. Honestly given Berman's death this is even harder to listen to than other notoriously miserable records like Benji and Carrie & Lowell.
And that's a shame, because there are some great moments here. "All My Happiness is Gone" is a great song that tries to sound happy despite its lyrics, and the first verse is a genius summary of getting old and alone that I can already relate to in my late-20s. "Margaritas at the Mall" looks at the plainness of the world, and I can picture Berman singing that song while at the titular mall and staring off sadly into the distance. I do wish it was a bit more fleshed out, which I could also say about "I Loved Being My Mother's Son." The sentiment of the latter is heartbreaking, but the lack of more detailed storytelling makes it a bit hard to get into. "Nights that Won't Happen" is probably the centerpiece here, as it has one of the most musically interesting openings and contains a lot of great lyrical moments throughout. I already mentioned the dark semi-chorus, but "Ghost are just old houses dreaming people in the night" is an all-timer. If the whole album was made of lyrical gems that good I'd probably love this, but given the more uneven quality there it can't make up for the lack of interest I have in the music itself. Nice little modern emo
Nice little modern emo album that is easy to listen to. It's more on the pop-punk side but it's also very soft and quiet. It feels emotional but there's no whiny vocals here. That's almost to its detriment, as it doesn't feel impactful enough in some places. And the lyrics are pretty anonymous, I didn't really hear anything that blew me away. [First added to this chart: 08/24/2019]
Mainstream dream pop
This is a really interesting sound because while it has a lot in common musically with artists like Ride and Slowdive it still feels like a modern pop album at heart. The first three songs are great but after that it continues without much variety and no real standout tracks. [First added to this chart: 07/20/2019]
Dream indie rock
All of the advance singles for this were tremendous. The whole album couldn't quite live up to them though. The last couple tracks really kill the mood despite a lot of the great things from "Mono No Aware" being present elsewhere. Will be checking out their next one. [First added to this chart: 11/02/2019]
Disappointment rap
I was a fan of Peggy's last album Veteran, though I thought it had about four great tracks and a lot of nondescript ones. I feel similarly about this one, as the songs near the end start to blur together. And, to be honest, the quality dips more on this one without ever reaching the heights of Veteran. Which is a sham, because the highlights of this album are really great. The opener is fantastic - I love how he plays around with R&B on this album - and the moment where he actually lets it go and raps are always strong. But there's too much meandering without substance, and there are too many beat switches and weird production choices. So yes, I'm actually disappointed, which in itself is disappointing because I was expecting this to be great. It's an exciting enough album though that I'm still pretty hyped for whatever he does next. He's the future of rap, you heard it here fourth. [First added to this chart: 09/15/2019]

Once again, good work put in. I just cant stand IGOR at all....
Solid list. Interesting to see some artists as high as they are, but I really like the commentary and placements.
