Some people measure the passage of time with each birthday, I do it with each year chart intro I write. As always, here are the dumb rules I follow:

1. Everything I listen to will be here because I am a completionist

2. The comments will vary wildly in quality and effort

3. Everything rated 70 or higher will someday work its way into my collection. Anything rated 65 or maaaaybe 60 is still recommended but I probably thought it had "consistency problems" or "no real standouts"

4. I've gotten a bit more critical with my rating scale because I noticed I rate 80% of albums a 65, so there may be a few more lower-rated albums this year

I'm a huge fan of Are We There, Van Etten's last album, and in fact it's sitting somewhere on my overall chart as I type this. I feel like I judge albums too much based on past albums by the same artist, so I don't want to talk about too many comparisons between the two. For the most part both albums are of the same style - relaxed singer-songwriter with a few dynamics and climaxes here and there. But for some reason this one just isn't doing it for me. I think a lot of the reason is that Are We There was a such a personal album that cut really deep, and this one finds Van Etten in a much more reflective place where she doesn't have much to say. Musically there's a bit more electronic elements, but I don't think they're emphasized enough to make the music feel much different than her past albums. It still feels like a Sharon Van Etten, just with a bit less fire behind it.

I'm going to give this another listen, so maybe this review will be completely different next time I update this thing. But I never got into any of the singles either so I'm worried my opinion won't change.

I listened again and my opinion is largely unchanged. I like the lyrics on the opening track but the music just drags by in a lot of places. [First added to this chart: 02/02/2019]

Solid list. Interesting to see some artists as high as they are, but I really like the commentary and placements.
