Top 100 Music Albums of 2019 by babyBlueSedan

Some people measure the passage of time with each birthday, I do it with each year chart intro I write. As always, here are the dumb rules I follow:

1. Everything I listen to will be here because I am a completionist

2. The comments will vary wildly in quality and effort

3. Everything rated 70 or higher will someday work its way into my collection. Anything rated 65 or maaaaybe 60 is still recommended but I probably thought it had "consistency problems" or "no real standouts"

4. I've gotten a bit more critical with my rating scale because I noticed I rate 80% of albums a 65, so there may be a few more lower-rated albums this year

Industrial rave

First off: best album cover of the year. Best album cover of the decade? Best album cover...of all time? I would not argue with any of these.

I've reached the "can do no wrong" stage of my Blanck Mass fandom. This isn't a radical departure for him, but it's still different enough to be essential. And I think it might be my favorite of his yet. Like the cover, the music feels cheesy in places, with happy synths and keys that clash with the intense noise behind them. I don't think I'm off base to say there are hints of atmospheric black metal in this release. And yet the keys that pop up in the second half of "Death Drop" are one of the best parts of this. "Death Drop" and "House vs House" are the standouts, with the latter being one of my favorite tracks of the year. The thing I always loved about Blanck Mass were the chopped up vocal samples, and "House vs House" is one of the only tracks where they show up here, but the fact that they absolutely kill there makes up for it. There are no bad songs here. I think this rating will rise, and unless someone (Danny Brown??) releases an all time masterpiece this year it will be tough to knock this out of my AOTY spot.

Bubblegum bass

Given what I've heard from SOPHIE and Charli XCX I was expecting this to be a kind of over the top album, but it's not at all. In fact, other than the end of Concrete Angel it really doesn't let loose at all. After I got used to that it really started growing on me, and while it's not a perfect pop album I kept wanting to come back to it. I'd still like to hear an exciting over the top bubblegum bass album I don't hate, so I'm hoping this sound gets more prevalent in the 2020s and we get more artists playing around with the sound.

Alternative R&B from the past

I had honestly never heard of Paul until this came out; I started following new music in 2014 so I guess I missed this leaking a year earlier in 2013. Listening to it now for the first time, it definitely feels of it's time - influenced by acts like the weekend, very similar to what Autre Ne Vuet was doing at the time, and a precursor to some of the spacier R&B that has evolved since. This is still really great though. There are tons of details, and I absolutely love the percussion. The vocals aren't really a highlight but the music, which is very layered and sounds pulled from a variety of influences, makes up for them.

UK Hip Hop

My biggest comparison for this album would be last year's Saba album, which I was not a fan of. The first reason for that comparison is that I really like the production. The first track has a cool flute sound going on, and the tracks all have some sort of extra thing like that to enhance them. It can get a bit busy at times, and there are too many strings, but overall it works.

The second reason that comparison came to mind is that the lyrics here feel like they're supposed to be much deeper than they are. There's a lot of socially conscious stuff, which I appreciate, but a lot of her lyrics are pretty surface level stuff about the dangers of gun violence and such. It's not that big of a deal, but it's a little distracting when you know exactly what she's going to be rhyming words with.

The one difference with the Saba album is that I really like Little Simz as an MC. She has a lot of swagger, a great flow, and she sounds fearless when rapping. I just wish this album felt a little bit more impactful. It's undoubtedly a very personal and well-thought out album, but I'm never able to make it to the end and still be invested in it.

Robot pop

The first two thirds of this album is pretty swell but there aren't any standout WOW tracks, though there are a few really good ones. The last third or so was something I really didn't like.

Airy grime

This is a lot less in-your-face than Konnichiwa. Despite that being the main reason I loved his last album, I found a lot to like in this too. The production feels a lot more detailed and spacious. Unfortunately, the rapping doesn't impress me as much. Skepta is mostly fine, if a little laid back. The lyrics range from somewhat insightful to cringey, and while there was nothing mind-blowing in Konnichiwa's lyrics Skepta's energy and delivery made up for it. The guests also drag this down a bit, especially towards the end when every song seems to have a couple guest rappers wasting time that could be used for more Skepta verses. I'll probably give this one another spin before year's end to see if anything new grabs me.

Late 70s experimental post punk

Any description of this album you read will compare it to bands like The Fall and This Heat and The Gun Club and those comparisons are all pretty spot on. This album has both the thing I like (frantic noisy post punk) and the thing I don't like (long texture-driven stretches where nothing happens) about those bands. It starts off very slowly and methodically and ends much the same way, with "Ducter" likely being my least favorite track on the album. In the middle it picks up a bit, especially with "Western" which is a really well written song that manages to stay energetic and interesting throughout its 8 minutes.

I admitted a while back that the type of more methodical post punk is something that isn't necessarily bad but is something that just isn't at all for me. So it's not really a surprise that I was overall not in love with this. There is a lot here that impressed me though, and I think that they could definitely make an album I liked if they focused more on the chaos than the restraint. I haven't even mentioned the vocals yet, which I find pretty enjoyable if a bit derivative of some other post punk bands. All in all this one deserves a listen, but it's not up my alley and I think they'd be more interesting if they carved out their own lane a bit.

Trip R&B

I really wanted to hate this because that cover is so repulsive. I'm used to it now but when I first saw it I didn't realize it was a sculpture and thought it was a digitally altered face and actually got a little nauseous. It makes the Malibu Ken album cover look like the Ghosteen album cover by comparison.

Anyway, I expected to hate this too because not only am I not a fan of this type of music but I've never been a fan of FKA Twigs. Even Cellophane, which got tons of phrase, did nothing for me. But I actually kind of like this. It's really inviting and layered, and several of the songs are really good. I'm not a Future fan, but he's used perfectly on his track. And Cellophane works much better in the context of the album - it's definitely the highlight. It grew off of me with each subsequent listen though and there are a few tracks I think are really weak.

Celtic black metal

Like most atmospheric black metal, this is a really great album to listen to while on a walk through a snowy area. Unfortunately I found it a bit forgettable as a lot of the Celtic folk elements from 2014's Aura have been trimmed down. It makes it a bit more predictable, but I'd still recommend it if you're a fan of the genre.

Experimental Coldplay

When Coldplay said this album was going to be experimental pretty much everyone knew that wasn't going to be the case. But given the band's history it is noteworthy that it's a lot more diverse than their other albums and takes a lot more risks. I would argue most of those risks don't pay off; there are a lot of tracks that really don't go anywhere and needed to be fleshed out. The lyrics have a purpose behind them and they usually put together a good message, but hearing Chris Martin swear really threw me off. It's an interesting album but I think I liked them when they were in straightforward pop rock mode more.

Solid list. Interesting to see some artists as high as they are, but I really like the commentary and placements.
