Top 100 Music Albums of 2019 by babyBlueSedan

Some people measure the passage of time with each birthday, I do it with each year chart intro I write. As always, here are the dumb rules I follow:

1. Everything I listen to will be here because I am a completionist

2. The comments will vary wildly in quality and effort

3. Everything rated 70 or higher will someday work its way into my collection. Anything rated 65 or maaaaybe 60 is still recommended but I probably thought it had "consistency problems" or "no real standouts"

4. I've gotten a bit more critical with my rating scale because I noticed I rate 80% of albums a 65, so there may be a few more lower-rated albums this year

Gothic cowboy

Man, this guy's voice is just amazing. I almost don't care about the music at all because of it. This feels like an album straight out of the 50s, but with better songwriting. It reminds me a little bit of Those Poor Bastards because it seems to want to conjure up music of a bygone age, but it feels less contrived than TPB (who I still love). It feels very natural, and in fact this is what I think I always wished Jay Munly or 16 Horsepower sounded like. It's not as gothic as those, but it feels like a classic country artist was sucked into an evil plane for about two weeks and then came back and wrote a dark album about their experiences. Plus, we need more gay country music. [First added to this chart: 08/24/2019]

Early 2000s alternative rap

That "genre" is not a lie - listening to this is like listening to a lost album from the hip hop underground around the turn of the decade. This is basically a female-led Deltron 3030, with futuristic lyrics and spacing scratching for production. There's even a track that samples Dr. Octagon's "Blue Flowers" for crying out loud! Kool Kieth is featured on one track!

It was a little long though so my excitement died down after a while, and every single track has the same flow with almost no variety. So while it's cool and a bit of a nostalgia trip (though for me that nostalgia is to like...2015 when I first got into alternative hip hop) I won't be relistening. Solid list. Interesting to see some artists as high as they are, but I really like the commentary and placements.
