Deus's Favourite Artists In The World Right Now by DeusExMackia (2019)

« View previous chartView next chart »

I seek out new music like it's an addiction, but these are the artists who I've managed to find a strong affinity with in recent times. More than anything else, they're the ones I'm really keen to see succeed, as their music has impacted me in some way. Warning: hell yeah, this all gets veeery pretentious and veeery self centred, apologies in advance!

This list is in no order, hence it's better to look at it more as a collection rather than and ordered hierachy.

Songs Of PraiseUnited Kingdom Shame
Favourite record: Songs Of Praise (2018)
Seen live?: Yes - Rescue Rooms, Nottingham, UK (April '18)

Shame's eclectic accessibility, South London charm and disgruntled-cum-happy sound captured me instantly. As someone born in South London myself, it's my civic duty to support local music, especially that made by those who are roughly the same age as me, and even more so because I see what they see in their words. Songs Of Praise is a monumental post-punk album because it captures the feeling and emotions of a down-trodden youth in modern southern England. That connection is the kind of thing I cherish beyond all reason, and when their music sounds as good as it does, it's hard not to be swept up in enthrallment.

Hope DownsAustralia Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever
Favourite record: Hope Downs (2018)
Seen live?: Yes - Cardiff University Students Union, UK (Swn Festival 2018)

In early 2015, I stumbled across a music video for a song called 'Clean Slate'. It was filled with vintage footage of what looked films from the 70s, every shot as summery as the music playing over the top of it. The band? A little known 5-piece from the suburbs of Melbourne. Their sound was textured, groovy, light but with acres of substance, vocals that sounded just right - not too overdone and far from underwhelming. Their sound was inviting, warm and jangly to the Nth degree.

3 and a half years later, and I'm in the front row for Rolling Blackouts's first ever date in Cardiff, playing at the Student's Union. They close with French Press, leaving me almost in tears - it's one of my favourite songs ever. Having waited so long to finally see them live, I can safely say the wait was worth it. RBCF's debut album, Hope Downs is the unequivocal jangle pop album of a generation; a summer soundtrack neatly packaged into two sides of 180 gram, and I can say with absolute certainty that it did it's job perfectly between June and September of 2018.

Joy As An Act Of Resistance.United Kingdom Idles
Favourite record: Joy As An Act Of Resistance (2018)
Seen live?: Not yet - booked to see them at a few festivals this summer.

Joe Talbot, bruising his lungs as Rottweiler, the finale of "Joy As An Act Of Resistance", comes to a close, shouting "KEEP GOING, KEEP F*CKING GOING, F*CK 'EM, SMASH IT" is, in one word, everything.

I first heard of Idles on BBC 6 Music one afternoon in the spring of 2017; it was love at first site. The track playing was the biting, effortlessly cynical 'Well Done', which just seemed to get at the crux of modern resentments. Their debut record was one I was actually a little fearful of. It's a brilliant record, but Brutalism really is just that - brutal. Heavy, but also with enough edge to be quick. There was no doubt though, I was seriously excited to see where this band went, considering just how of the time they seemed to be.

It's their follow-up however, which drops all notions that the 2nd album should be the 'tricky' one, that blew me away. JAAAOR is the most essential record of the decade, and I have no doubts in going out on that limb. Idles have emerged not just as one of Britain's best bands, but one that is bringing together a movement of people, seeking something from modern music that has been missing for such a long time in Britain.

The one band that I know with absolute certainty in 30 years we'll be saying "Yeah, I was there when it happened".

BlondeUnited States Frank Ocean
Favourite record: Blonde (2016)
Seen live?: No - waiting for his next UK date

Frank Ocean is your friend, at least that's how I see it. His music speaks to millions, but on an individual level. The amount of time I have spent with Blonde is unreal. It's a record that is there for you in the whee small hours, whether you're feeling lonely, cosy or just need some company. Ocean speaks in a way that not many artists do; he captures a slight sense of dissent and dissapointment with the modern world for our generation, caught up in social media and new kinds of relationships.

Not only is his music absolutely stunning to listen to - I could write essays about the production of Channel Orange - its insanely innovative and forward thinking. There have always been artists regarded as groundbreaking or 'the next big thing', but not many genuinely live up to the hype. Not so here; Ocean does live up to that expectation, and more than smashes through it. 3 albums in and each has been as bold, brilliant and captivating as the last. Frank Ocean both as a figure and a musician is an idol for me, and one who makes you feel so comfortable and close with his music.

Acts Of Fear And LoveUnited Kingdom Slaves (UK)
Favourite record: Acts Of Fear And Love (2018)
Seen live?: Yes - Cardiff University Students Union, UK (Nov '16) and Tramshed, Cardiff, UK (Nov '18)

Hometown heroes; I have the pleasure of being from roughly the same part of the world as the angsty punk duo, and even have a few mates who swear they've met Isaac Holman in Sports Direct.

Let's get some context; Slaves hail from Tunbridge Wells, a proto-typical middle class, Tory-voting commuter town that is far, far less posh than it pretends to be. It's got the super rich and the super poor, all of which is drawn together into this arrogant, draining sense of self-worth that is so inheberating that anyone with any sense will do whatever possible to get out of there. As a teenager growing up there, it drove me f*cking nuts.

Which is why the line in Photo Opportunity - "Go out with my friends and see nothing much changes around here" - struck me like a blunt instrument. The paradox for young people is that Tunbridge Wells is simultaneously a hell hole that doesn't care for you unless you're earning over £40k a year, and also the only town for miles that has anything remotely close to a good nightlife. Slaves are the embodiment of the anger that stupid setup creates. They are the voice of those trapped in the South East, desperate to get away from the make-believe let's-pretend-we're-posher-than-we-are nonsense of the place. The embodiment of and the answer to the resentment living there creates, and mighty, mighty good fun live.

We’re Not TalkingAustralia The Goon Sax
Favourite record: We're Not Talking (2018)
Seen live?: No - Only found out about them after they'd finished their UK tour

Honesty is the currency of The Goon Sax, and their rustic, conversational sound only hammers that point home. And it's an honesty that isn't blunt or on the nose or just for show; it is one that purely tells things how they are, whether that be relationships or social media. It would be an insult to suggest I haven't found a bit of my soul in We're Not Talking. The Brisbane trio, who's beautiful, jangle pop influences stem from their legendary family connection with The Go-Betweens, stand now as an absolute must-listen recommendation from me. "Let's be nervous in your room again".

ColourmeinkindnessUnited Kingdom Basement
Favourite record: Colourmeinkindness (2012)
Seen live?: Yes - 2000 Trees Festival, Cheltenham, UK (2018)

Basement do not score points for originality, nor are they the most innovative or ground breaking band around at the moment. What they do have in spades, however, is character; an affable happy-emo charm, with a 90s-dipped sound that delivers vast, horizon-filling epics as well as closer, warmer, more laidback tunes. That charm is really what sells them for me, as in it's almost impossible not to love them when they're this fun to listen to. There's plenty of music out there that is easy and simple to engage with, but lacks in substance. That's not the case here; sure, Basemnt's sound isn't original, but it's the thought and effort that counts, and they deliver that wholeheartedly.

8. New entry

IgorUnited States Tyler, The Creator
Favourite record: IGOR (2019)

Seen Live?: No - UK dates sell out at the speed the ISS orbits the Earth

You want innovation? Something that's genuinely different? It's right here with Tyler. Tyler is far more than just the biggest character to emerge out of Odd Future, he's one of the most all-round interesting, creative and inspired personalities around in popular culture at the moment, period. Fashion line, artwork, YouTube skits, oh and one hell of an amazing back catalogue of music. How much of it have we not seen yet? I really do wonder how many songs he's started and never finished or never released. And yet when he does drop a "throwaway song" like Okra (his words, not mine), it slaps like no f*cking tomorrow. Heck, Okra was one of my most played songs of 2018, that hyper-heavy bass line and his slick delivery making it ice-cold cool.

Flower Boy is an incredible record. Lyrically, it's personal and hits hard; this really is one packed with feels. Musically, every beat is as fully realised and as nifty as the last, the samples are stellar and all those god damn features! He keeps good company, and that's best shown when he's making music with them. Not only one of the best hip-hop records of the decade, but certainly one of the best blends of hip-hop and RnB I've yet come across.

And now we have IGOR. IGOR is game-changing, it's a revelation, it's the future. Hip hop? Fuck off, nuh-uh, how about neo-Soul Hop, and every possible interpretation you can make from that phrase. Earfquake breaks gravity every time it gets played, whilst A Boy Is A Gun is possibly the best song about being infatuated about someone I've ever heard. As for What's Good, jesus christ...when that "DRACULA DRACULA DRACULA" line comes in, polarities shift across the universe. IGOR is such a concentrated piece of musical energy that it seemingly encapsulates all the brightness of Tyler himself, and all the wholesomeness of his sad-boi lyrics. Like I said, it is the future.

IsolationColombia Kali Uchis
Favourite record: Isolation
Seen live?: No - Waiting for a UK tour

One of the defining neo-RnB artists around today. Kali Uchis, like many Latin American singers, brings images of Spanish-tinged sun-drenched beaches with colourful buildings and a cool exoticness with her sound, but Uchis's sultry vocals take centre stage. She has such dexterity in her delivery, and incorporates a multitude of RnB elements into her sound to offer something wholly original. Every track is a glimpse into her world, and her style is to die for, frankly.

United States Of HorrorUnited States Ho99o9
Favourite record: United States Of Horror (2017)
Seen live?: Yes - 2000 Trees Festival, Cheltenham, Uk (2018)

A blistering, bonkers band. My mates and I stumbled into the set for these guys at 2K Trees in 2018 and came out 30 minutes later, absolutely bewildered. Ho99o9 are less music and more experience, utterly commanding all your senses with a sound that infuses aggressive hip hop beats with metal and punk elements, and then stomps it all through with a heavy pair of Doc Martens and some leather trousers. Seriously, that set was life changing. 2 minutes of noise, short break, then back in again, each time with more energy and more frenziness.

Not the sort of band you'd play at a dinner party, but then again, that makes them 10 times better alone just for that fact.
