(Avantgarde) Black Metal

Out on my birthday! The best EP I've heard in a while. It's a progression of their sound showcased on Mirror In Darkness, which was one of my favourite albums of last year (and decade). This one's only 21 minutes long, but equally dark, aggressive, chaotic and intense. Maybe even more so, 'cause the production is a bit rawer, which was my only complaint about Mirror in Darkness, it sounded too clean. If this was a proper album, it'd easily be a contender for album of the decade, but even as an EP it's incredible.

Kathodos (there's no point in having both in the top 30 or so):
The new LP from SC is... slightly disappointing? The songs are too repetitive. I also preferred the production and overall sound on their 2020 EP, Endless Detainment, and I preferred the songwriting on 2019's Mirror In Darkness. The middle is a bit cluttered with several shorter instrumentals. However that's all nitpicking, and this is another strong release from one of my favourite current metal bands. Where Kathodos truly excels is the uniqueness. They've added even more elements to their genre palette: noise, atmospheric synths, even more avant-garde elements (on Dereliction), a 9-minute repetitive clean guitar riff on the closer and even a fuzzy guitar solo on Offering Of Tongues. The interludes and intros/outros are surprisingly quiet and moody too. But make no mistake, this is just as much of a chaotic black metal nightmare as anything they've done. I still prefer Endless Detainment.

East Coast Hip Hop, Abstract Hip Hop

Easily the best underground rap I've heard this year. I mean it has the smoothest, trippiest production of the year, the lyrics are fantastic and make for a loose but very cool concept. It also contains some of the most heartfelt hip hop songs I've ever heard. That's usually not a quality I expect (or like) in my hip hop, but Ka managed to floor me with every song here, no matter the mood, theme or producer. These songs are all winners.

Experimental Hip Hop, Abstract Hip Hop, East Coast Hip Hop, Jazz Rap

The best work by both of these incredible artists. And that's saying a lot.

Art Punk, Post-Punk, Noise Rock

"Ultimate Success Today was written around a typically chaotic tour schedule (they have visited the UK 10 times in the last 5 years). It was recorded in a 19th Century church with high arched ceilings, a setting which gives the album a distinctive natural reverb throughout. For the first time Protomartyr have session musicians who contribute saxophone, clarinet and cello to the mix. These performances are in tune with the rest of the band’s spirit, adding to but not overpowering the core sound." - RYM user RichardWiggins

Impeccable songwriting and inventive ideas, all the while operating in genres which have been around for 40-50 years. But what sells this album is a huge, noisy, incredible sound and unique but very fitting production choices.

Hardcore Hip Hop, Political Hip Hop, Abstract Hip Hop

One of the rare political records which really matter.

"Pseudo-Christians, y'all indifferent
Kids in prisons ain't a sin? Shit.
If even one scrap a what Jesus taught connected, you'd feel different
What a disingenuous way to piss away existence, I don't get it
I'd say you lost your Goddamn minds if y'all possessed one to begin with"

Rating metrics: Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some charts can have several thousand ratings)

This chart is rated in the top 1% of all charts on BestEverAlbums.com. This chart has a Bayesian average rating of 92.1/100, a mean average of 95.3/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 95.3/100. The standard deviation for this chart is 6.0.

Great chart! A few I loved, and a few I couldn't stand (ugh that Code Orange record...not for me). 26 in common, including quite a few which are deeper cuts (Ulcerate was great, as was the Backxwash album). Probably my favorite 2020 chart I've seen so far, I'll have to dig through your year charts for other eras.

It’s in the queue, might get a chance to play it tomorrow. The difference is that I know a few of the older Roisin/Moloko songs, so I kind of know what to expect. Or not?

So I was reading the intro for your pick for Jessie Ware, and I think it might happen with Roisin Machine.

Thanks Tilly! Gotta say that the feeling is mutual, I've been browsing your chart a lot, but my queue is full atm. Hope I'll find some time for The Innocence Mission, Basic Plumbing, Tennis and Godthrymm at the very least.

Stellar notes and nice picks! Although Konvent should be higher! ;) Great seeing Tortuga and Orc make someone else's chart. Both great!

Check out Haunt's latest when you get the chance!
