Top 100 Music Albums of 2020 by Keatownrodriguez

What an odd year for music. It was definitely good but it was so far removed from my expectations of what I thought I would be listening to this year. I had no idea I'd be listening to Taylor Swift all the time or that Sufjan would drop a great album. Not to mention how many of my favorite albums are from artists I wasn't familiar with before this year. Lots of surprises and lots of great records.

Top songs of the year so far in no particular order

If you're too shy let me know - The 1975

My Rajneesh - Sufjan Stevens (WHY WAS THIS A B SIDE!!!!)

Betty - Taylor Swift

You'll Miss Me When I'm Not Around - Grimes

Kill Them With Kindness - Idles

Featherweight - Fleet Foxes

Cyr - The Smashing Pumpkins

Beginning Of The End - Weezer

Gospel For A New Century - Yves Tumor

Aries - Gorillaz

I'm a Joestar - Open Mike Eagle

Hand Crushed By A Mallet - 100 Gecs (Fall Out Boy Remix)

I Ain't Nice - Viagra Boys

I Want To Touch You And Be Sure - Asian Kung Fu Generation

Peace to all freaks - Of Montreal

Run - Joji

Come Over - Matt Watson

Hollow - From FFVII Remake

Come & Go - Juice WRLD

JU$t - Run the Jewels

Black Licorice - Peach Pit

Paradise Lost - The Used

My Own Soul's Warning - The Killers

At The Door - The strokes

It took me a while to really like this album just because usually my first few listens to albums are very causal. Usually, I'm either going to bed, cleaning the house, driving, or just doing anything instead of just sitting down and listening to the music. At least for me, this is an album that has to be focused on at least your first few listens. Having it on in the background it just sort of comes off as standard indie fare. But when given the proper attention it deserves you can see just how masterfully indie tropes are used here. DVD Menu + Garden Song + Kyoto work great as laying the groundwork for the combinations of descriptive lyrics and distorted softness although I do wish the horns and similar instruments used in Kyoto were more prevalent. The rest of the album does tend to mill a little in a way that's not as amazing as the start but there is so much to love in the seemingly aimless. Of course, there's the closing track that brings back the bombastic emotion. [First added to this chart: 07/03/2020]

This was one of the first big albums of the year and I was really itching for new albums, this one just so happened to fill that void. I listened to it and immediately fell in love with the whole vibe and tone of the record with it's dark robotic textures. I picked up the album as soon as I could on vinyl and would listen to it nearly nightly as I fell asleep or was working on school. You'll Miss Me When I'm Not Around and Delete Forever will be all-time favorite songs of mine. [First added to this chart: 01/30/2020]

I was not expecting to like this at all let alone be listening to it constantly since its release. From the opening moments of Conversation I realized I was really into the final songs of an artist who was taken at the start of his career. All the songs really drive home the sort of thought that were in Juice's mind on his final days. It gets downright touching on songs like Rightous and Wishing Well. Yet it has amazing bangers like Come & Go (seriously it's so driving) and the closer Man of the Year which leaves you feeling some hope after the mostly sad album. Okay I've returned to this album after the new year and I finally love it. Dynasty is as strong and anthemic as an opening track can be. Then to follow it up with the super catchy XS then the nu-metal screamer that is STFU makes the opening moments amazing. I do thing there are a few misteps most notably on Akasaka Sad which I can't stand and Comme Des Garcon which was one of my favorites on first listen but I find myself disliking it the more and more I listen to it. Paradisin', Love me 4 me and Bad friend is another great stretch but the album sort of goes down from there. The last 4 tracks are fairly fun but not near as amazing as the highlights. See I say this album is sort of disappointing, yet here it is fairly high on my year list. Why, who knows. Maybe it's because of my bias towards the man himself after all of the content he's made to entertain me in the past and now I feel a need to support him. Whatever it may be I will listen to this album a lot and most likely eventually grow to love tons of these tracks. That's obviously not a bad thing because tons of moments are really pretty and fun but no songs outside of the singles and maybe the opener really feel dynamic. There's no growth or climax for the most part. So I'm confused on what to say. Oh well, those singles (especially Run) are amazing. [First added to this chart: 09/14/2020]
