Oh this is sexy. This is lovely. This feels appropriate and timely and fun and political in ways that The Strokes haven't achieved since Is This It. It's still not on the same classic tier in my opinion, but it's really not far off, and Julian's vocals are probably better here than any other project I've heard of his. I didn't have high hopes after Comedown Machine, but to say this exceeded what I expected is an understatement I can't even begin to quantify. Bravo. [First added to this chart: 12/09/2020]

Not her best work in my opinion, but I really can't imagine Lenker writing a bad song at this point. Even the lowest point of this album for me (verse 3 of "not a lot, just forever" - specifically "and your dearest fantasy/is to grow a baby in me") couldn't put me off the track, let alone the album. It's apparent how raw and genuine this is without any background, but listening to the live performances of these songs really highlights just how talented Lenker is, and just how untouched this intimate project really is. Bridgers really is one of the most exciting artists currently making music for me. While this isn't quite on the level of "Stranger in the Alps" for me, it is a far more cohesive and consistent album that gives me a lot of hope for her future releases. "Kyoto" is an obvious stand-out single, but every track here had at least a line or a mood or a musical motif that caught my ear right off the bat, which is honestly huge given that my first listen was while driving for Domino's.

Neither are on here as both are short EPs, but Copycat Killer and If We Make It Through December are also hugely worth your time. Copycat Killer sees Rob Moose aiding in re-imaginations of what are almost certainly the four strongest songs off this album, and IWMITD is a lovely Christmas album with Fiona Apple and Matt Berninger features.

I've been a little too keen on the term "genre-defying" lately, but it's pretty hard to avoid with this project. I've never heard an album do everything Bartees Strange manages to trek through on his debut, and it leaves a real high hope for future projects. Kelly Rowland offers a sexy beat and fun flow that could be on my playlists with Chief Keef, Stone Meadows reminds me of the Kings of Leon b-sides I've enjoyed, there's moments here that remind me of a better Milky Chance, there's moments here that remind me of Marietta or other Near Mint releases, it's just a huge batch of sounds that all somehow mingle naturally and are executed with skill and finesse. It took me about 4 years to appreciate The Idler Wheel as much as I should have, and I still don't love it as much as some do. This was a far more pleasant first listen, but has yet to grow on me as much as Idler Wheel did. I'll give it time - I think this is deep and personal and fascinating, but a little meandering and sparse compared to what I would have liked. Really good, but I don't think it's 10/10 material. A great album as expected, probably not their best, but I'm so glad 2Chainz has been getting more legitimate chances to shine like this lately [First added to this chart: 12/09/2020]

This ish slaps, it's a little (intentionally, I think) inconsistent tonally, but THIS FLESH OBSCENE, WE ALL BURN IN OUR OWN HELLFIRE, and ESCAPING shine so bright that even some of the other tracks that are a little slow or a little long just feel like they're building up to those big moments in relistens. So milo went away and Rory came back with this project. How does it compare? Thus far, it's about on par with most milo projects - not his best or worst work, but a very good album nonetheless, with impeccable as expected production from The Jefferson Park Boys. Hey, Perfume Genius finally clicked for me! This was beautiful, and good enough that a relisten of their past discography has just shot up my priority list. [First added to this chart: 12/09/2020]

This is far from the darkest or most anxiety inducing album I've ever heard ... but this in combination with some insane stress levels and a very odd week (4! separate coworkers hospitalized for totally separate, random emergencies) really set my heart off in a genuinely uncomfortable way. This is one of the only albums that has ever caused me physical pain, and almost certainly, is the only album I've ever enjoyed which caused me physical pain. That's ... impressive? I think.
