Grunge, and in particular, Pearl Jam, didn’t happen overnight. Stone Gossard and Jeff Ament began recording together with Green River in 1985, and added members along the way until Pearl Jam was formed in 1990 with the addition of Mike McCready and Eddie Vedder. Originally known as Mookie Blaylock (the album Ten was named in honor of his uniform number), Pearl Jam had its debut album finished by April of 1991. It was released…and promptly went nowhere. It took almost a year for everyone to catch on to the fact that Ten was a pretty good album, and its sales surpassed even those of Nirvana’s Nevermind.

And while Pearl Jam continues to this day, they never improved on Ten. The album contains many memorable songs: “Alive”, “Jeremy”, “Even Flow”, “Oceans”, and “Black” are all great songs. Much of the rest is basically forgettable, and even though the album sounds great throughout, the quality of songs declines beyond those five tracks. Less here than on future albums , Pearl Jam begins what has been a constant throughout their career: consistently inconsistent albums. Their live shows keep them going, but they never bested their debut album, and Ten, while very good, had plenty of room to grow from. Classic, great in spots, but far from perfect.

Vs. is the second album from Pearl Jam. The band takes a more aggressive approach on most of the album, and they were helped by their refusal to make videos for any of the songs, giving them a sort of a mystique. The album has more of a live sound, and contains some classic material. "Daughter", "Go", and "Rearviewmirror" are among the excellent tracks here. "Rats" and "Leash"...not so great. But it's a solid second outing, and proved that Pearl Jam was going to be in it for the long haul and not just a one album wonder. Eddie Vedder continues to grow as a singer, and the band shows that it can rock as fiercely as anyone. This is a very good Pearl Jam album...flawed, but very good.

Vedder has stated that this was the most uncomfortable album he's recorded. They've gone on to be pretty much the sole survivors of grunge, building a huge fanbase and continuing to put out good albums and being politically active. Vs. is a fine and important addition to a Pearl Jam collection.

Rating metrics: Help Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some charts can have several thousand ratings)

This chart is rated in the top 6% of all charts on BestEverAlbums.com. This chart has a Bayesian average rating of 88.6/100, a mean average of 87.4/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 88.7/100. The standard deviation for this chart is 12.5.

I like the Chart but The Black Crowes album, even though it is an excellent album, is an exaggeration to consider it the best ever.

Neat chart, but the write ups and historical perspective you've included for many of these albums make it something special. I had a good chuckle when I finally arrived to Loveless, the album I was most excited to hear your thoughts on, and there was nothing there!

What I found most intriguing is where you actually argue in your comments why an album isn't that great - which is an unusual way to create a greatest 100 chart. A bit too US-orientated for my liking and too many so-so bands. Good to see one album each from Australia & New Zealand.

Stunning chart. I own 83 of the albums in your chart so it's inevitable that I'm going to love it. Also love the notes. Great addition.
