Top 100 Music Albums of the 1990s
by mrmcrook

The 90's was a fascinating decade. Grunge dominated the mainstream and became an added genre for those of us who mainly loved Metal and music of the heavier nature.

My list used to have a lot of compilations. There's still some in there but I'm trying to ween them out.

Any footnotes are just personal ramblings for my own entertainment.
And to remind me of the joy the music brings before all memory is erased.

My top 100 from the 368 albums from the 90's I own

94.58 This took a while before I realized just how fucking brilliant it is. Thought it alright at first but then some years later while listening to it something clicked. It's all due to when the internal frequencies within line up exactly to the external ones around us. Then....BOOM. Musical god is found [First added to this chart: 10/21/2020]

88.33* Great songwriting. Top sequencing with no filler. Any of the tracks on this could have been pushed as singles. This is quite a masterpiece in its own right. [First added to this chart: 03/06/2025]

85.90 The best Britpop/rock album there is. It's as Beatles as you can get without it being the Beatles. Not that that's bad. Really good album with a heap of great songs. Mostly killer, not much filler. [First added to this chart: 10/21/2020]

85.83 An original sounding band and album which is why I love it. Upbeat down tuned somber alternative pop rock. That about sums up the sound even though that sounds very contradictory. Bloody good depressingly happy music. [First added to this chart: 10/21/2020]

85.38 Cracker debut. Chock full of high energy up-tempo tracks. I don't use the term 'fun' when describing a music type or style. But this is fun music. How can you not love it? 02/24 [First added to this chart: 03/01/2024]

84.64 Top notch album. Consistently great songs with even most of the lesser known tracks being just as good as the hits. Many of them having a very epic feel about them. Again Mike Patton is not just rock vocalist but shows he is the crooning rock king. [First added to this chart: 12/08/2023]

83.83* Great album. Way way better than I was ever expecting. So many top tracks right through, too many to be able to pick a favorite. Which is what makes this an outstanding album. [First added to this chart: 04/25/2021]

83.50 Another great album from Polly Jean. Interesting overall tone with this, being full of deep heavy rhythms, semi foreboding bass lines and lyrically dark under currents. Fucking love it. One of her best. [First added to this chart: 10/21/2020]

80.76 When I split from the stupid bitch in 2000, this was a joint CD we both liked. She took it. Just got my own copy now. How familiar it all sounded after 22 years absent. Alt rock made simple. The basic element of their song structure is a bit of a piss take but they do it so well they outshine many other bands of that era by producing better songs. Enjoyable album which deserves more credit than it gets. Good tracks right through [First added to this chart: 09/16/2022]

80.714* Great Alt/punk with a SoCal punk rock vibe added. Very consistent right through. For an album with 14 tracks, there's not really any filler. One of the better from this genre and era. [First added to this chart: 11/19/2020]

I always enjoy a chart that's different from mine, versatile, and favors personal subjective choices over "pop" orientation. Good stuff.

I agree with a lot of what you say. The value of compilations, how good Dopes To Infinty is (even if it is not in my decade chart t hods a respectable position in my yearly chart), and I had the same experience with NMH including first hearing of them through BEA....and I need to get around to a Headless Chickens album - heard a lot of their songs over the years and Gaskrankenstation is an all time favourite

This is a unique and very interesting chart. While I haven't included many compilations or live albums on my own charts, your rationale for doing so makes sense. Lots of stuff here I've never heard before, so I'm looking forward to sampling some of your selections that are less familiar to me, starting with your #1 pick.
