AOTW #6: One To Rule Them All (2/9)

Dread Sovereign deliver a master class in Doom on Alchemical Warfare. Epic, diverse, dynamic & well crafted. The kind of album that gives you chills up your spine because everything is just so perfect. So good. The kind that makes you wish you were back in ninth grade so you could pass notes in class like secrets about this special thing you discovered. Dread Sovereign seem to take in the whole world of Doom in and then breath it back out with a fresh, novel spin. With nods to to the past as diverse as Hellhammer and Reagars' Saint Vitus but in ways that that don't seem like a retread.

This is one of those album’s where you discover a new best song every time you listen to it. Just face it. You don’t need to worship Satan to realize that this is going to be one of the best metal albums of the year. Mark it down. I'm calling it here in February.

Highly Recommended!

ALC #8: Sounds like: Kiwi Indie poppers binging on Millions Now Living era Tortoise, The Sea & Cake and Teenage Fanclub
Genre: Indie Rock
Location: Australia
Release Date: February 12, 2021

Was going to go with this great black metal album by Hulder or some killer Drone Metal by Divide & Dissolve, but then I heard this and it was a pretty easy choice. Just some great Indie Rock which reminds me most of mid-90s Sea & Cake without sounding derivative.

I'm not going to be around tomorrow since I have stuff with my kids so decided to launch this thread tonight. Hope you like it!

AOTW #9: The Grower
aka Thank God for Coffee and Apple Pie
Genre: Indie Folk
release date: 1/15

10. that’s how many weeks there has been in 2021. 8. That’s where I’m at for my AOTW. Not too shabby actually, but time to get back on it. I have two slots to fill. Which makes me anxious. Makes it difficult to sleep at night. So thank God for coffee and apple pie. The kind you get at downhome, but beatnik, coffee shops off the interstate. One of the one’s run by some old hippie and without Trump flags waving every which where. The kind that when you leave, you’re not just filled up with gas and food and pinetree air freshners (although I love those tacky things!) but a bit more of you. That you’ve been heard. Acknowledged. That you connected just a bit to a random place at random point on your random road to somewhere. And that’s what’s good road tripping is all about!

AOTW #3 (1/16/21)
Indie Rock/Emo
release date: 1/15

Just a great Indie Rock album that takes me back to the mid-90s! Has the energy and ferocity of early Throwing Muses and late-90s Rainer Maria. And an easy choice for my #3. Thanks, Merc!

Gowi

“She’s a little bit country, I’m a little bit Hall & Oates and ABBA” is the best way I could describe this album in a meme but you know, it really does work. Glad a lot of people are having some mileage with this one. - Gowi

Repo's AOTW#4: Coloring Inside The Lines
aka For those waiting for the next Phoebe Bridgers to Drop, I Give U This...

aka What my girlfriend's from the 90s are listening to right now. Feels like stumbling upon a long lost friend from college (who you always had a crush on) and grabbing a cup of tea at the some college coffee shop and catching up on her marriage and subsequent divorce with the sincere promise of getting drinks later (but also knowing that will never happen).

Makes me miss Boston (more specifically Cambridge)!!! Nothing better than that!

Led Zep

"Sounds Like: 2 long Pharoah Sanders style spiritual jazz jams, but it's surprisingly fresh and not a 1:1 copy.

Origin: Leeds, UK

This is everything you need in quarantine. Seriously. Uplifting, happy, fun but also ever so slightly melancholic jazz that you can put in the background or foreground and it sounds equally awesome. The harmonium gives the whole thing a distinct feeling, the compositions are eclectic and 99% of the time the band keeps the listener occupied. There's a lull here and there but never a serious issue that detracts your attention from all the good stuff that's going on.

The band is comprised of:
Tony Burkill (saxophone, band leader and main composer), Adam Fairhall (piano), Neil Innes (bass), Sam Hobbs (Percussion), Chris Dawkins (guitar), Pete Williams (percussion), Dan Edward (french horn), Matt Bourne (Harmonium), Rachel Modest (voice)" - Led Zep

Great

To The Power Of Three

1st take: Pretentious avant-garde noodling that's all over the place. Just a sprawling mess. Stick to a genre, dammit!

2nd take: Hmm.... These guys are kinda like a re-9invention of 70s Residents.

3rd take: Hot Damn! These MF'n' cats got it! Best ALC yet and that's saying something since I really dig that Bicep's album! AND Gowi's dream pop pick.

Glad she's liking it! I think it's a solid record. Plenty of fun, and some great melodies. Might even be better than any twee record I heard in 2020. Not sure why the BEA rating is so low. Singapore's twee scene has been really strong the last few years. Sobs, Aspidistrafly, Cosmic Child, and Subsonic Eye have all released records I'd recommend with ease. (Subsonic Eye's 2017 effort isn't as good as this new record, but it's worth a spin— the real gem of the scene is Sobs' Telltale Signs though, that's a fantastic record).
