The ultimate Soul concept album, it has crossed genre borders and is frequently listed as one of the best records ever based on quality of its music, the effortless way in which the songs flow, the warm voice of Marvin Gaye and the somber but hopeful lyrics.

It´s really sad to see that many decades after its release, the issues approached in the lyrics are still pretty much unsolved. The poorest Americans dying on wars abroad, racial tensions and environmental disaster are realities that we see everyday. For all these reasons, this record continues to be relevant; or actually, it´s even more relevant than ever before

I like the mix of Brazilian rhythms and topics with 70's style sounds, especially funk.

The lyrics are charmingly naive because they feel extremely honest and appropriate for the time, place and situation of the composer.
The stories in the songs and the way they are told are a fantastic window into many aspects of the urban "carioca" Afro-Brazilian culture.

Topics like Football, History, Mysticism and "Candomblé" are treated in a fresh, creative, sometimes lighthearted, sometimes dignified manner.

My favourite Pink Floyd album. The Orwellian concept is a vehicle for a unique analysis of society by an increasingly political Roger Waters.

Even better than the concept, this album´s best feature, is the incredible guitar work by David Gilmour.
I think he reached his zenith as a guitar player in Animals, and his solo in "Dogs", that starts in minute 3:41 is for me the best of all time. There are other guitar players that may play louder, faster or more acrobatically, but Gilmour´s guitar has superb taste and is extremely dramatic. It almost sounds as if Miles Davies had switched instruments.

The packaging of the songs, with the two acoustic short ones in the beginning and the end, and the 3 main pieces in the middle makes the album structure unusual but coherent. Dogs and Pigs are in my Top 5 best Pink Floyd songs due to their powerful lyrics and music.

The cover is one of the most famous and creative in history and I still have trouble thinking that it's an actual
picture and not a painting. This record deserves a 10/10 for sure.

I would say that the two best things of this record are: 1) The perfect sound quality and; 2) The poetry of most lyrics. "Time" for instance is one of the best songs ever and it gets those accolades both because it has very powerful music, very powerful lyrics and very powerful interpretation.

I guess that 20 years ago this would have been in my top 10, but I may have overplayed it.

Is a great collection of songs and I specially like the mix of punk with rock & roll and reggae. It is very important because of the relevant and intelligent lyrics. Iconic album cover as well. [First added to this chart: 07/04/2012]

Os Novos Baianos lived in community singing songs, playing football and smoking a lot of weed. Other hippie bands produced annoying music, but Os Novos Baianos got it right. The song "Preta Pretinha" is a work of art and the rest of the record is very good too. It was selected by Rolling Stone Brazil as the Best Brazilian Record Ever, which is a huge achievement in a country with so many genius musicians. [First added to this chart: 08/02/2012]

Rating metrics: Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some charts can have several thousand ratings)

This chart is rated in the top 1% of all charts on BestEverAlbums.com. This chart has a Bayesian average rating of 91.7/100, a mean average of 92.4/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 92.3/100. The standard deviation for this chart is 6.2.

Really cool chart, great comments which you added for pretty much every album. Lots of recommendations for Spanish- and Portuguese-language music. Based on the albums in your list that I know and love, I'm sure to find something I like from the albums I haven't heard.

Nice diversity - especially with the number of Latin American & jazz inspired artists/albums ~ definitely unique in that sense and says something about your personal tastes. Personally, I didn't get all that excited by your selections ~ which says something about my personal tastes.
I am sure the following observation will change over time, but I was intrigued by what I guess is a coincidence in your chart having 11 albums in each decade of the 80's, 90's, 00's & 10's.
BTW, nice to see one entry from Australia.

I have mixed emotions about this chart on the whole.

‘Escafandra’ is at large not wrong about it being good in terms of its variety chronologically and its regional scope. The former is something I demand of charts; whilst the latter does add a great deal of interest. The jazz albums also add a lot of interest although they are by no means unique. However, I must say that the chart is weak on one decade – the 1990s, from which the albums included – with the conspicuous exception of ‘Dummy’ – really are to my mind overrated at best.

You put the Beatles on number 1 what is clearly cool. But i like the rest of your list as much as i can. Some artists i don´t know before from Spain and Brazil but that makes the diversity .

You put a lot of effort on this. Really good chart with amazing picks. Im more of a Revolver/Highway 61 kind of guy. Though theres good tracks im not too fond of White Album/Desire. I 100% agree on Sgt Pepper though, Strawberry Fields and Penny Lane shouldve replaced some of those weaker songs.

¡Hey, man!

I hope you liked La Barranca. Just came to check your recommendations. Now I'll have to pay more attention to Low, I've heard some songs but I will check that album. It was hard for me to put Beatles' White Album for the same reason as yours: it is so irregular. But I guess we put it there for that exact reason, I love those albums where you can tell the band is finding exactly different sounds and ideas that's why I love Pearl Jam's No Code or Radiohead's Kid A.

Anyway... ¡Saludos desde México!
