Beautiful songs individually, but foremost an inspiring collection of tunes that create a dreamy, contemplative mood when the album is played entirely. You can spend the whole fall and winter listening to this album as there is no better music to match a beautiful dark, grey and rainy Vancouver day. [First added to this chart: 11/16/2015]

Most of the songs are very beautiful and the whole record balances very well between soft, introspective music, and more upbeat tunes. The mix of moods creates a good balance between happy, sunny tunes and songs that are grey and colder.

I also like the voice of Jeff Tweedy; it reminds me of John Lennon.

This album works much better in a CD than in a record, as in the latter it gets cut in many vital parts and the flow is interrupted. The cover is very iconic as well.

This record turned out to be an instant classic. Great songs and amazing harmonies that draw you inside an autumn like feeling of Pacific Northwest deep forests. [First added to this chart: 07/04/2012]

I got a copy of this record in 2003 and it quickly became one of my all time favourites, as I started playing and playing it constantly for months.

The songs are all good and the tone of voice matches perfectly with the energetic, some times fast, some times slow and somber mood of the record. The guitars and the bass are a work of art.

It frequently ranks in many lists as one of the best albums of the first decade of the 21st Century, but for me it's one of the best ever.

This record is very solid. Except from the 1st song, which I find a bit weak, the rest of the album is extremely danceable but mellow at the same time. The lyrics and music sound very simple, but that just adds a more likeable personality to the album. The rhythms are a mix of Son Cubanos, Early style reggaetons, a bit of rap, cumbia, etc. I find this album to be a great listening experience that cheers me up all of the time. This album is a great collage of music in different languages mixed with audio bites from Latin American or Spanish radio. It all flows very well and the music and lyrics reflect the personality and ideas of Manu Chao, who besides having a rock-punk-ska musical background, also embraces latin american rhythms and culture. I think this album should be in the Top 100 of any chart list, if more Anglo Saxon people would be interested in listening to music in other languages. "Mi Vida", "Me Gustas Tú" and "Mr. Bobby" are my 3 favourite songs. [First added to this chart: 06/28/2012]

Excellent record of the best songs of this extra fun band. Most songs are classics and will make any party in South America go happier. Very energetic music and fun lyrics with aesthetics that remind the listener of a circus troupé. [First added to this chart: 08/21/2012]

A great album, very atmospheric. I think I need to listen to it more to get it, because it usually ranks higher in most lists. [First added to this chart: 08/12/2012]

Rating metrics: Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some charts can have several thousand ratings)

This chart is rated in the top 1% of all charts on BestEverAlbums.com. This chart has a Bayesian average rating of 91.7/100, a mean average of 92.4/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 92.3/100. The standard deviation for this chart is 6.2.

Really cool chart, great comments which you added for pretty much every album. Lots of recommendations for Spanish- and Portuguese-language music. Based on the albums in your list that I know and love, I'm sure to find something I like from the albums I haven't heard.

Nice diversity - especially with the number of Latin American & jazz inspired artists/albums ~ definitely unique in that sense and says something about your personal tastes. Personally, I didn't get all that excited by your selections ~ which says something about my personal tastes.
I am sure the following observation will change over time, but I was intrigued by what I guess is a coincidence in your chart having 11 albums in each decade of the 80's, 90's, 00's & 10's.
BTW, nice to see one entry from Australia.

I have mixed emotions about this chart on the whole.

‘Escafandra’ is at large not wrong about it being good in terms of its variety chronologically and its regional scope. The former is something I demand of charts; whilst the latter does add a great deal of interest. The jazz albums also add a lot of interest although they are by no means unique. However, I must say that the chart is weak on one decade – the 1990s, from which the albums included – with the conspicuous exception of ‘Dummy’ – really are to my mind overrated at best.

The White album is a good pick for number 1. It's stuck with me a lot longer than Abbey Road

You put the Beatles on number 1 what is clearly cool. But i like the rest of your list as much as i can. Some artists i don´t know before from Spain and Brazil but that makes the diversity .

You put a lot of effort on this. Really good chart with amazing picks. Im more of a Revolver/Highway 61 kind of guy. Though theres good tracks im not too fond of White Album/Desire. I 100% agree on Sgt Pepper though, Strawberry Fields and Penny Lane shouldve replaced some of those weaker songs.

¡Hey, man!

I hope you liked La Barranca. Just came to check your recommendations. Now I'll have to pay more attention to Low, I've heard some songs but I will check that album. It was hard for me to put Beatles' White Album for the same reason as yours: it is so irregular. But I guess we put it there for that exact reason, I love those albums where you can tell the band is finding exactly different sounds and ideas that's why I love Pearl Jam's No Code or Radiohead's Kid A.

Anyway... ¡Saludos desde México!
