101-200 Albums of 2021 by Mercury

Some of these albums are very good and it was hard taking them off top 100 of year. I really love this year in music so far. Also, a good few of these will be revisited and commented upon later down the line and, who knows, may rise high in and into the top 100.

I will now start another chart which is 2021 spill overs or 1-and-Dones (what this chart was for months). I had to make a spreadsheet like a dork because I know that soon this will get freaking way way to confusing to keep in order across 3 charts. Hope someday we have longer chart sizes.

(Messy, dissonant, stripped down, at times amateurish, confessional as hell singer/songwriter album that made me emote and empathize intensely while also squirming from time to time beneath the direct and quite honest gaze of the songwriting. Brilliant, really.)

Well, yeah, this album is a bit weird, ain't it? This is mostly just Sarah Mary Chapman, a piano, some really untrained and just plain ugly at times vocal performances, and a whole friggin truckload of brutally direct and honest and heartbreaking and (occasionally) darkly funny poetic songwriting.

Despite how harsh and unforgiving the opening track is (and it is and I would be lying if I said I wasn't more than a bit uncomfortable) it manages to sink its claws in me within a couple minutes. There isn't something interesting happening melodically or harmonically, there is no nice hook, not really anything that specifically captures me and holds me. Its just the way she sings and plays and states what she states, there is no filter or, if there is, it is probably best that some filter exists cuz boy is this heavy. The detail with which she expresses her internal agony and emptiness from the jump is awe-inspiring. And it does indeed act as a clear indication of what this entire 42 minute album is.

If you like that Mount Eerie/Microphones directness and honesty and the feeling of just hearing what the artist is thinking off the top of their head, and if you like the childish intimacy of some Daniel Johnston, then you may like this. But, fair warning, there is also just as good a chance you'll despise this album in its ramshackle anti-charms and its claustrophobic "TMIness" and unflinching and unrelenting commitment to never giving you a pretty part or a break. Listen to track 1 and maybe 2 and if you notice you are empathizing with Sarah's voice and worldview, then listen to the rest. Its worth it for sure.

(For what it is and what it is trying to be, this is quite good. What can I say I am a little biased toward folk singer/songwriter albums that make me feel more keenly the stark loneliness and desperation that is constantly there but rarely faced head-on)

Graeme James is a New Zealand-based Singer/Songwriter. This is a 26 minute EP released on January 1st, 2021. He was a busker for years and has been recording his own songs since 2012.

The music here is extremely melancholy and introspective. The instruments (all played by James) are all played with a beautiful sadness. There is acoustic guitar of course, and piano, but also some beautiful violin, Mandolin, some accordion, some bare-bones drumming, and other instruments to fill in the sound.

The first 2 songs of this collection are very slow, ruminative, acoustic songs (both beautiful and mesmerizingly austere). Then with the 3rd track "The Voyage of the James Caird" things pick up quite a bit, with a somewhat driving rhythm, and a faster tempo, all building up suspense while James sings a narrative about a doomed ship crew.

With the track "Northern Lights" James sings in an almost hopeful, loving way with some sweet guitar and some tasty piano chords and mandolin. As the song crescendos and the added vocals come in, the song goes to another level of sublime.

Track 5 is a beautiful song which is features a female vocal to add another layer of beauty.

Finally the final song is probably the best of the bunch. "Time" is just a starkly honest song about a pervading fear of growing old and never truly living.

When James sings " It pains me now to say, I've never lived a day like it was my last one. And I probably never will." its so heartbreaking and relatable. Later, in the closing seconds of this remarkable album, James leaves us with a truly haunting yet hopeful line:

"Maybe its enough to be carried by your love through days unending."

The lyrics at first hit me as being the same old poetic singer/songwriter fare. But as I listened and paid attention I was struck by some very incisive and crushing lines about aging and sadness and hope and love and all those vague yet powerful concepts. The lyrics really work with the intimate and earnest singing by James as well as the sparse and tender instrumentals.

This is a really high quality winter album, full of ghostly images and sparse and beautiful melodies. It was what I wanted to hear on this cold January morning. Its highly recommended for fans of other earnest, poetic, somewhat philosophical or romantic singer/songwriters such as Iron & Wine or Damien Rice.

Impressive!...in both quality (of the insightful and descriptive notes and comments) and quantity (I'm only up to 69 2021 albums for the year as of now and I think I listen to a lot...wrongly I guess, hah!)
