Carlile's second best album of the decade. It's a little less polished and more intense in parts. That's not a bad thing. Turpentine is one of my favorite songs of hers.

This album should've done for Buddy what American Recordings did for Johnny. The master of Chicago Electric Blues goes acoustic and traditional and pulls it off beautifully. The opening track, a version of Skip James's Hard Time Killing Floor should be enough to pull anyone in. This is the album that turned me onto the blues and I believe it can do that for others.

Illinois stands on its own, but it's even more interesting when it is linked to this album. He said he was going to do all 50 states but that of course would have been impossible. What he did accomplish was creating a masterpiece about the Midwest, Great Lakes, and Rust Belt. I come from this part of the US and so I feel deeply grateful that works of art this beautiful were inspired by it. We do not have a lot of our own literature compared to the South or the coasts.

PJ Harvey's best album IMO. She broke through with Rid of Me and To Bring You My Love, but this album is more complete and mature than either of those. It proved that she was an artist who could evolve.
