Johnny Cash was already a legend but the American project brought him to a new level. Thanks Rick Rubin. American I and II were already a huge accomplishment but American III and IV gave were recorded after Cash's health began to decline and so they were something else entirely. They helped the world see the beauty of someone elderly and mortal. American III and IV are a testimony to Cash but also to human dignity. Bowie's Dark Star and Leonard Cohen's You Want it Darker are spiritual descendants to American III and IV.

The first half of this album is so strong that it makes up for the second half which is inconsistent. With this record Adams established himself as a key songwriter of his generation. He is McCartneyish in the sense that he needs an editor. He tends to prioritize quantity over quality. Still, this is his best record in terms of its peaks - basically side one.

My second favorite Lucinda album, the first being Car Wheels. I don't find all her albums accessible. This one is. It's got a bit more edge that Car Wheels, a harder sound and harder themes, but it's still easy on the ears.

Carlile is an out of this world talent. This is her best album in my opinion. The twins (her back up band) really need more credit for how much they contribute. They co-write a lot of the songs and their harmonies add a lot of texture. They were in a punk band before joining up with Brandi and that gives Carlile's music a different kind of edge.

This is a great collection of songs. Girls in their Summer Clothes and Long Walk Home are the two highlights IMO but almost every track is memorable. The production is a tad over compressed which is unfortunate.

Red Dirt Girl is not quite at the level of Wrecking Ball but it's very good and deserves to come out of the shadow of WB. I see it as a little more in Emmylou's usual vein but under the influence of what she did on Wrecking Ball. Dave Matthews makes a memorable, and pretty great, guest appearance.
